The Olicamp space-saver cup that fits around a Nalgene bottle has been around a good while, however being stainless steel it is a heavy option.

At a backpacking store this weekend I saw this venerable cup offered in aluminum, both plain and hard anodized, which I haven't seen before. The fold-out handles seemed solid and the cup has ounce markings stamped deeply into the side. Unfortunately they stamped it so that the lettering is backwards on the inner surface, but you can figure it out well enough. 24 ounce capacity to the brim.

I will stay with my SnowPeak 700ml cup since it is a bit wider and thus fits the more squat 1L Gatorade bottle. But the aluminum Olicamp would be a good choice for Nalgene users looking to save both weight and cost.

No affiliation, just lookin' out for my ETS bros and she-bros!

Good to know of this interesting alternative. When I am in gram-counting weight weenie mode, I ditch my Nalgenes in favor of the good old Gatorade bottle, about the lightest you can get, aside form a 1L Platypus (and significantly cheaper).

Any idea as to how much lighter the aluminum container is, compared to the SS variety?

I'm always open to big-gram-savings. It's that delicate balance between available cash and experienced knees, you know. OTOH, hot-aluminum-on-lips continues to be an extremely unpleasant experience. This is where thermally inefficient stainless steel, weight-inefficient also, maintains its practical advantage.

Take a look on the snow peak website here they have a set of 2 silicon protectors that clip on to a mug for $6.95. Might be an option for you.

The existence of a "real" lid is one of the virtues of the Snow Peak 700. It makes a very fine, minimalist (essentially water boiling) cook kit. Just add heat.....

Ritter AMK PSK tin foil to the rescue! Someone said in another thread that they haven't used theirs yet. This is one of the frequent uses of mine. I use it on my cup and also on my boiling can.

My SnowPeak has a good lid but I find myself just using a doubled-over piece of heavy duty aluminum foil instead. Lighter and more packable. Not as durable, of course.

I just picked up the GSI version of this cup but have a couple questions for those of you who currently use the cup based on your experience.

Do you simply stack the 2 when they're in your pack, or does the cup stay on the bottle when you are using the bottle (but not the cup)? If the latter, do they stay together naturally or do you find you need to use something to keep the 2 together?

the bottle will nest fine in the cup, at least mine does. Its tight enough to not make a rattle sound when fit together and walking, yet if you have set in a outside pack pocket or bottle holder, the cup will stay put when you pull the bottle out to drink.

Occasionally if there is some condensation from the bottle it will create a bit of suction so if you pick up the bottle the cup will cling to it.
