the pockets and unzipped legs are the result of trying on winter gear at 80F something temps!!!
i have had people suggest that a modern suit with Gortex and not just nylon would work like one of those sleeping bags with the arms.some sort of WP bootie and a bug net for your head and you could sleep in the open without the claustrophobia of a bivvy bag.
if you need to get up late at night there would also be no need to get out of a tent,just unzip.

Depending on the temps a Selk Bag might also be useful.

You are right about "depending on the temperatures"; the spec in the link says "Specifications: Temperature rating: 45 degrees Fahrenheit."
The way things have been this past winter in my area, that would have been plenty. Minnesota, I don't know.
A better insulated same style suit doesn't seem beyond present technology.

I would think a regular sleeping bag would be much warmer. Just like mittens are warmer than gloves for your hands. But you can't walk around wearing a sleeping bag.
