as i don't take my old car out of town in the winter all i expect is a wait by the side of the road for the tow truck to arrive.in Minnesota with the engine not running and no heater that could be a cold wait and a long one if i'm not the only one off the road.
when we had that bitter winter a couple years ago i ran a post here of the propane camp stove i rigged up to keep the inside of the car warm--i got some "thats a bad idea" feedback and it was a sort of goofy idea brought on by hood high snow banks.
so i ran across this fine old Polaris Snowmobile suit for $1 at a yard sale.that with a big pair of boots,gloves and a head and face cover i should be ready.
after i had my Wife take the shot i asked what she thought of my winter survival kit.



her response---if the cops find that in the trunk they will think its a hold up kit----

I can't really laugh too hard 'cause I remember one winter when my typical outerwear was insulated coveralls. They were Carhartt brown (but not Carhartt) -- they weren't bright red. Insulated coveralls are very good at holding in body heat. Good insulated boots and wool socks completed the package. I never found a need for a balaclava but I imagine a Minnesota winter would change my needs.

These days I prefer to layer (wool and synthetic) and leave the coveralls in storage.

Awesome!! I assume the zipper will zip up to cover the front of your neck. I like the bright color. If you're waiting for help you WANT to attract attention. Add a sleeping bag and you're good to go!!

My wife will be moving to northern Wisconsin when we retire. It will require a whole different level of preparedness compared the the Chicago 'burbs.

I love it! Looks nice and cozy. And it'll certainly attract attention. You really can't beat the price point either. Well done, Canoedogs!

Ken..the entire thing zips up tight,legs included.there is a big knit collar that i assume was ment to go under the helmet and cover the back of your neck.the inside is lined with poly insulation like a sleeping bag.the shot was taken on a 80F day we had so i just pulled it on for the shot without zipping everything up.the red should be a standout if i'm outside the car clearing snow from the tires,or whatever.this one is sort of old with the first Polaris logo so it might be a collectors item,for a buck i had to have it.
the boots by the way are made by Cooke Sewing here in Minnesota.they are well known in the canoe gang for their packs and tarps.i got those from a friend who worked at one of the dog sled races,he said he stood for hours at one of the check points and never had cold feet.
and lots of outside pockets that i'll fill with candy bars,Bic lighters and big candles,no need to unzip and loose heat for a snack.

Brings back memories of snowmobiles and refrigwear overalls. The primary difficulty with the jumpsuits involves potty procedures. Much exposure is required, and is less than comfortable.

OTOH, what happens in the coveralls stays in the coveralls.

No metaphors .... my wife and I are truly retiring in northern Wisconsin a tad northwest of Green Bay.

Actually we bought the land a few years back (7 acres between two lakes - enough room for my wife's horses), and we're having a house built this summer. Hope to retire in 8ish years.

I think those pockets act like winglets - providing much improved aerodynamic properties ... for better mileage.
