Hi,

Anybody have experience with the new Fireknife from Mora and Light-My-Fire? I wonder if it would prevent you from battoning on the pommel of the knife and what is the purpose behind the strange grind on the blade belly?

Also it looks like the knife will outlive the ferro. rod. I'm not a big fan of multi-purpose tools, but it's an interesting idea.

I guess my first thought is that I don't like parts of my knife coming off. I prefer things simple and solid, so I bring a knife and a ferro rod ... and a lighter. I don't need them attached to each other.

I like the grind on the blade point - a bit like the Mora 2000 - maybe just like it.

I wish they gave a bit more detail regarding the "grind" on the back of the blade. I wonder if its ground so the corners of the spine are "sharp"? ... which is OK but might be irritating if handling the blade from the back - like I do with fine whittling.

I have one (in bright red) and and think it would be great for having in my pack for day hikes.

The firesteel would be good for several thousand strikes so doubtful it would wear out in your lifetime. Firesteels for me are emergency backup and not primary tool for fire-making (I'm fond of matches and Bic lighters for that).

The knife spine being designed to strike the firesteel means you don't need to carry (or keep track of) a separate firesteel striker.

The firesteel is quite secure in the knife handle, when placed in there properly.

I would not try cutting a tree down with the knife but it could certainly whittle sticks and fire tender.

Capable and super-light.

And inexpensive.

I like the video, short and sweet. I think I'll get one. Light-My-Fire is my preferred ferro rod.

Regarding the idea of the ferro rod running out, I'd use that ferro rod in the handle as a back up. Also, somebody said above that they like their tools separate. Note taken, but this tool does a good job at having a small number of moving parts. Meanwhile, the moving parts look like they would be fixable by a 5-year-old.

By the way, if you have ever used a sharp knife spine to scraper ferro rod, then you know it makes a small scraper feel like a frail toy. A knife spine can shoot a shower sparks more easily, as the video shows, because it enables way more leverage.

They happen to sell it at Mountain Equipement Coop. I'm going to have a look at it to see if it's battonable.
