Up until now my outdoor knife has been an old USAF pilot's survival knife (which I plan to reprofile to a scandi grind).
Nothing more fun than messing with knives. After regrinding several into new lengths and profiles, I built a forge and made an anvil and built my own. I salvaged most of my fingers, and the burns are healing nicely.
Reprofiling to scandi grind of a Canadian belt knife had a bad outcome for our brother
Hacksaw. The pilots survival knife seems primarily designed to carve a way out of a cockpit, and would likely be tempered tough and flexible, rather than hard and brittle. Hard and brittle supports a sharper edge, but is less amenable to prying abuse. Tough and flexible if perfect for abuse, but if the edge geometry is too thin, the edge will roll, thus ceasing to be an edge.
