Cash-based transactions is definitely one way to fight credit-based spending, the bane of the American way of life. But not everyone got into debt through unnecessary spending. I know one or two people who got hit with big medical bills. There are also plenty of people who suffered job loss, took out college loans, etc. Sometimes you don't have a whole lot of control.

Yeah, medical bills are perhaps the #1 reason people go bankrupt. It is really awful that happens to many families.

NeverTheLess, it is wise do what is within our power to stay debt free. Crap happens, to be sure, yet it is never a good idea to be the cause of our own problems.

I would highly recommend listening to Dave Ramsey online, on the radio, or check out some of his books at the library. He recommends a very sensible plan of managing your money. I became debt free a few years ago, after you do that, things do get easier. I promise. Get yourself and emergency fund started this way you can handle unexpected expenses.

When I started the program I was having more bills than a pay check. With some hard work, and some re-thinking my priorities I was able to get my financial life in control.

Good luck!
