I'm glad these folks are okay. There's some mighty beautiful and mighty spiky terrirory up there. Reading the story, I can't help but think of how many bullets they dodged. The Kim tragedy looms large.

But what was supposed to be a day trip turned into a harrowing fight for survival after the couple’s SUV became stuck, forcing them to trek through knee-deep snow for 10 hours until they sought shelter.

I swear, I'm going to start stuffing survival gear around the spare tire of every family member's vehicle. Whether they like it or not.

Notice how all these stranded stories start off with a truck or SUV. People need to stop over-estimating their vehicles' capability.

i have been up to La Ronge in the winter and it's real road survival country.Northern Minnesota is the suburbs compared to what i saw up there.a friend who worked up there and i was with told stories of people coming back to the out lying villages after a night in town and not wearing anything but a car jacket who went off in the ditch and set fire to the spare tire to keep warm.
maybe a BS story but there is not much up that way.

It's not overestimating, just their vehicle is more capable so it went in further. There's a saying in offroading, the more capable you are, the deeper and further out you are stuck. Of course if they had a shovel they could've probably gotten out without problem.

They are extremely lucky to stumble upon a cabin with fuel, food and a radio.

It was Honda CRV. It's mislabeled as being an SUV. It's really just a car. Also, I wonder if it was FWD only or 4WD. Maybe I'll start a thread on what vehicles are suitable for the purpose of venturing out into knee-deep snow.

one of our cars is a honda crv,if the front wheel drive starts to slip the rear ones kick in.you see a lot of them in Minneapolis because they get around in the snow just fine but no one expects to do any 4 wheeling around the forest roads up north, winter or summer.
