Extra CCW ammo?

Howdy all,
I'm looking for some ideas on a way to carry some extra ammo for CCW. Here is my situation. I CCW a 5 shot revolver (9mm) that uses what are called "half moon" clips to hold the shells. These clips appear to be stamped of of some sort of thin metal and don't appear to be very robust. I would like to find some way to maybe carry an extra clip or two. A fully loaded clip is approximately the diameter of a half dollar and obviously the length of a 9mm shell. Any ideas / thoughts?
Thanks, LW

A half or full moon clip is going to be little chunky. Are you looking for a "on body" or "off body" solution?
I would assume a full moon or two half moon clips would fit in a speed-loader holster. On the outside of a belt and more than a couple inches thick wouldn't make it the easiest to conceal though.

Carry a Glock 19 magazine and reload the revolver by pushing the rounds out of the magazine with your thumb into the chambers like a Pez dispenser...
I kid, I kid!
I was going to recommend a Bianchi speed strip then I realized that won't work with rimless cases.

Probably the best answer.

I hated to say it because it didn't answer the OP's question. Trading the revolver for a .38 would allow you to carry speed loaders or speed strips and wouldn't change much else. It wouldn't have to cost you much either.

I haven't seen a S&W 940 (if that is what you have) in a long time, but IIRC the very early ones had a beryllium spring gizmo that was behind the star to extract individually loaded cartridges 9mm cartridges should headspace on the mouth of the cartridge (although I surmise they headspace on the extractor in many autoloaders), so loading as Glock-A-Roo suggested from an autoloader magazine should work ONCE....gravity probably would not extract all cases
I just checked my Bianchi Speed Strip for my SW442, and it holds 9mm cartridges fairly securely

Haven't owned a revolver in a LONG time. I carry a .45acp subcompact with 10+1. If I know ahead of time I'm going to end up somewhere where I might need more, I'll throw an extra mag or two in my back pocket.
Speedloader or two could always be dropped in a front pocket for a revolver.

These clips appear to be stamped of of some sort of thin metal and don't appear to be very robust. Chances are, better quality replacement moon clips are available. You might want to research into those if your's are that bad.

Hey again,
Thanks everyone for the responses. Some of the options presented look really good. I like the the look of those Delfatti holders and the Midway replacement moon clips. Of course, I like the idea of a different gun too! I have been looking at a Glock 26, a Kahr K9, and a Sig P239. The are all available for rent at the local range, I just haven't tried them yet. A new gun has a lot of appeal. However, I really like my current one (it's a Ruger SP 101 by the way) and even more importantly, I can hit what I aim at with it. Lot's to think about.
Thanks again, LW

My CCW is also an SP101 but in .357 so I carry speedstrips.
9mm in revolver requires clips so the storage shape for reloads is constrained.

Ruger SP101 is one of my all time favorite revolvers. But let me maybe use a different tact. If you think you're going to need more than 6 shots in a defense situation, especially one in a urban social setting, you don't need to use speed clips, you need to get the hell out of there as fast as you possibly can. That is good advice if you carry a weapon with 6 shots or 16.
Trust me, I'm not some Dove or anti CCW or personal protection. Far from, but you don't ever want to be in a situation where you're in a firefight and have to reload. The faster you can get yourself out of the situation the better. A concealed firearm puts you a leg up on the general public for personal protection but a CCW is not a hero license. I don't mean that in the sense that I am insulting you, but whether you have the protection or not, you're best bet is to always try to get away fast.
And if I totally misread your intentions or situational need, I apologize.

Like you I also have a CCW license though my conceal carry these days is more like pepper spray and a stun gun instead of my Ruger LC9. One thing I've learned studying the subject and talking to police officers is that if you ever do shoot someone, two things will happen. One is that you will likely spend the night in jail and two you will put your lawyers kids through college. You can automatically count on being sued regardless whether you are in the right or wrong. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use a firearm if you are being threatened, but you better think thru the consequences well ahead of time because there will be unpleasant consequences. Thanx Monk

It seems to me that I ran across someone who was using stripper clips for this purpose for 9 mm. I think he was using 7.62X39 stripper clips.

I have a 940. I put two of the fullmoon clips in my right front pants pocket. All the other doodads go in other pockets.

I use stripper clips for my 380. I think they are standard 30-06 clips but I can't remember for sure. Not so quick to use though. The rubber strip (what are they called??) work well. I use them with my .38 and they are quite fast and easy to carry. However using them with a gun that requires half moons would be very slow. Best to find a way to carry the half moons.
I had an old webley(?spelling?) 45 with half moons. Never found a really good way to carry them.

Of course, I like the idea of a different gun too! I have been looking at a Glock 26, a Kahr K9, and a Sig P239.
^ This. The P239 is really nice, but a bit heavy for the round count it provides. Nothing wrong with the G26. Keep in mind you can also use a full size magazine with the G26 which gives you a nice spare option. There are other good options out there like the HK P2000SK (accepts full size P30 mags) and SW M&P 9c. Also consider hanging out on defensivecarry.com a bit. Good luck and be safe, -john

Went back and re-read the original post, nevermind me saying carry a speedloader or two. Never owned anything where you'd need the half moon clips so I have no experience at all with them.

Rather than a revolver with a reload for 10 rounds total, I carry a 9mm semi-auto with a 15 round mag and depending I may carry a second 15 rnd mag. . . But not in SOCAL. That's for the other states where I can CCW.

Me again, Thanks everybody for your thoughts and ideas. I really appreciate it. Comms, need to apologize at all. I'm not sure that it is possible for me to agree with you more. I harbor no "Dirty Harry" kinds of bang, bang, shoot 'em up ideas. I sincerely hope and pray that the only time my weapon clears it's holster is at the range. My thoughts were along the lines of the saying about backups. 1 is none, 2 is one (or something like that) Thanks again everyone. LW
