I'm sorry but I have to disagree.
It may be my age or my non "A type" personality, but the perfect career for me is being in a boat on a fresh water lake with two lines in the water (maximum allowed in Wisconsin) with a worm on one hook, a minnow on the other hook and falling asleep on a sunny warm day in the bottom of the boat being gently rocked by small waves, not catching a darn thing that I would have to clean to eat, and coming home to a loving healthy family in a mortgage free house.
Sorry about the lack of ambition folks, but I earned it.

Some days, as I sit behind the PC preparing yet another presentation or project plan, I, too, long for employment that provides more opportunity for excitement. A friend of mine who is a police officer and a member of the local tactical unit (SWAT) talks about the training they receive and the skills they learn, and my eyes get glassy like a kid in a candy store. I can't get enough, and I keep the guy talking for hours, which he doesn't mind. Jokingly, I asked him what the guys at the precinct would think about a 30-year old rookie. He said they get 60-year old rookies from guys that retire from the military or other kinds of work. Still, as interesting and as noble a profession as it is, I don't think I could quite handle the pay cut at this time with two children and a stay-at-home wife.

Last night on public television they had an hour show on this group of people (Frenchmen, Germans, and Swedish) who study glaciers and their movements in France. They study them to try to predict when a glacieral lake may burst and flood a town. They even have caves built within the glaciers so they can measure the movement of the ice. Very interesting time laspe photography involved. The crew also dove into water that was way below freezing to map caves and water pockets in the glaciers. One crewman stated "I think my lips are frozen." after returning from a dive into the waters. It was the only part of his body that wasn't insulated. The 3 man dive crew also each had a backup respirator when diving, only one of which hadn't been used by the time they surfaced. Definately an "ultimate career" as these are some of the few glaciologists doing this research.

Bountyhunter, swap your fresh lake for salt water and I'm right there with you. However, my ultimate job would be a small self sufficient farm (croft) on the shores of a sea loch in the West coast of Scotland.

Johno:
Funny you should mention fish farming as I have considered it as a business venture. With so many problems occurring in the red meat supply, contamination of streams and lakes with mercury & PCB's which get into the fish supply, and more people looking to cut down on their consumption of red meat, it seems like a natural money maker. The problem is and always has been, as in any business, startup costs and establishing your reputation and customer base. Unfortunately, that takes me out of the running. I hope you succeed if you try for it.
The nice thing about fresh water fishing, other than sturgeon, or a monster catfish there aren't any fish big enough to pull you out of the boat or tip the boat over.

Unfortunatly my dream of a small farm will never happen in the forseeable future, family circumstances dictate otherwise. It was and always will just be a dream. Still its nice to dream.
