i get lucky at yard sales,$3 Mora knives,123 stoves for about the same.$2 Eureka dome tents,couple bucks for a old steam water distiller,that sort of stuff.but this weekend i passed a "estate" sale on the way to the grocery store,the line to get into home went out to the sidewalk! i went the next day later in the afternoon and found that the fellow there had a clock repair shop and had some very nice outdoor gear,$235 for bamboo fly rods is sort out of my price range so i wandered out to the garage where the cheaper "good stuff" can be found at these sales.it was really picked over but under a table i saw a heap of OD canvas with a $4 sticker and just $2 that day because they were closing down in an hour or so.well i payed the price and hauled it home thinking it was a tent,maybe a Army pup tent.
well i flopped it around on the basement floor trying to get which end was up,a big mat of poncho like rubber seemed to be the floor but--but??..so i had my wife come down and grab and hold up ends and it finally fell into place--a WW2 Army jungle hammock in wonderful shape!





not a rip,tear or mildew on it any where and all the netting was intact and as strong as the day it was made.there is one small repair that has that "GI" look that is done very well.



from the inside it looks unused.



and in the storage pocket i found repair netting and the loops needed to attach the lines to the grommets,it looks like the last person just used clothes line rope in a few spots to try and make it work.too heavy for canoe trips i'll set it up when i'm car camping for a day time nap spot.i found lots of info on web sites on how to string it up and use it..

Great find. I've seen asking prices for WW2 hammocks in the $250 range.

That is cool. I never saw a genuine military WWII jungle hammock before. They've been cheaply copied to death.

I have one of the M1966 GI jungle hammocks and it is ok, I have used it in Panama and Puerto Rico but it is so narrow! It has no bug netting (you need the GI Mosquito bar)and it uses a GI poncho for the cover. There are some shockcorded toggles for quick attachment of the poncho.

I have since invested in a proper jungle hammock that has a nice tarp and the hammock is 6' x 9'. It has a separate netting that can be easily hung.

Anyway, sorry for babbling, enjoy your rare find. It looks perfect!

Byrd..Yup,thats the label on the inside.right now it's just hanging by the rain fly to air it out but this will a good excuse to hit a couple surplus stores in Minneapolis for some line instead of just using camp shop para cord.
by the way check out the "scupper" just under the white tape used in the bug net repair.you twist and tuck it under a canvas loop on the inside to seal the hammock but i wonder if it's ment to be used in a certain way to avoid getting outside among the bugs and rain.......

Snake Dr..i do find Army surplus stuff at yard sales,old style jerry cans,a huge WW1 canvas tent--$10--some other odds and ends.i wonder if it has to do with South Minneapolis being right next to Ft Snelling.
