Anyone ever use an I.V. bag as an emergency water container in a survival kit? I did a search of the forums and couldn't find anything. I am interested in any pro's or con's. Because of their thickness they should be fairly rugged. I'm working on a method to fill them. Have to do some brain storming.

I think an MRE hot beverage bag might be easier to find, and fold smaller for storage....but am sure an IV bag is an option

I'm happy with my home made substitute...a roll of heavy duty vacuum bag material sealed to a pouch to approx 8"x 12"

It seems like an I.V. bag would be a much less convenient way to carry water than other options. It would be hard to clean, inconvenient to fill and to drink from, and not particularly compact. Just about any purpose-made water bag would be a better choice as an emergency water container.

I like the outside of the proverbial box thinking, but I would have to agree that an IV bag would probably be a poor choice for a survival water container (unless it was the only thing around).

The really don't compact down very small, for the size I would rather have a Platypus. You would also need to devise a clever way to reseal/fill them, because once opened they are not easily resealable.

During Desert Shield in Oct. 1990 the King of Saudi Arabia gave all of us GIs the gift of water. It came in IV-type bags that did not have the admin spouts. Really freakin' inconvenient.

FYI, from an old medic- the dextrose IV can be used to drink, but the normal saline intravenously is better than drinking the former.

Given there are plenty of roll up and fold up choices for this kind of thing, I am thinking that an IV bag is just not a real good choice.

I have several iv bags in the collection, used as cheap dry bags for fak and psk applications- snip off the top, dry, fill, roll and seal with a binder clamp. The platypus bags are essentially iv bags with a convenient screw top, with which I habitually dampen my face, shirt and pants when trying to get a drink. Rigid containers are just so much easier.

I prefer rigid bottles for most use, but you can't compact them down for carry in a survival kit. While I use the same bags that come in the Doug's PSP Plus for my pocket kits, the platypus bottle do well in bigger kits where space is important.

Replace the cap with a push/pull cap and they become much easier to use.

The best deal (cheap, light, and sturdy) for recycled canteens is an electrolyte replacement drink bottle (Gatorade or similar). If you are carrying large quantities, two gallons or more, the collapsible feature of Platypus bags is important. On the other hand, in cactus and mesquite country, rigid plastic or metal is worthwhile. I keep a variety of containers around.

In the old days, we would rinse out a gallon Clorox jug and use that for carrying large amounts.
