This is not related to a disaster of any kind. But it is fascinating. I picked it up from a post on an un-related forum. A message came down from a Canadian who was saying that people have been hearing really strange sounds. Some people thought it was some kind of weird project being done in the USA. Hundreds of people have called it in to their local police. My best guess is that it's a natural phenomenon. Possibly related to the large solar flares that are happening - and will be re-occurring in next few years. Somehow when ionized particles from the Sun interact with the Earth's atmosphere (and magnetic belts) ... it produces these weird noises. Listen yourself - it's quite intriguing. BTW, it's only a guess. I could be wrong. It's not hard to see how indigenous people, esp. those living in ancient times, could have interpreted this phenomenon as "mystical spirits" or "voices from the gods". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDW7vGw4t0If this is a hoax ... please advise. The wind can cause vibrations in things that can make these kind of humming sounds.
And sometimes, sounds can be carried from a long way away.

Gonna have to look up the Wendigo. :-)
As for sucking sounds in retirement money .... too too true. Maybe it's the Wall Street Bank Wendigo making these noises. Hahahaha !

In ancient times? Just check out some of the comments for the video. Some of us modern, non-ingienous people think it's a message from God. Others think it's the powerline.

Last fall when I was in the boundary waters I heard a similar low frequency hum at night when the aurora was active. Except this hum was continuous, no variation.
If I had been in an urban area I would have suspected a failing or heavily loaded power transformer... but I was 10s of miles from any power lines.

The aurora make no sounds - in and of themselves. They are caused by the interaction of the incoming ions with the atmosphere. Electrons in the atmospheric molecules (mostly N2 and O2) produce emission spectra from the electron displacement. This happens in silence. The rapidly changing magnetic field can, however, make sounds in powerlines or other conductive materials (even natural ones) if it is close to the natural frequency of the material.
Respectfully,
Jerry

I go with Martian Tri-Pods or a Sasquatch family reunion. One other option is a train echoing through some canyons. They run a lot of large freight trains in Canada.

It's the Vorlons, they are coming. Is that the wedding band that wears the white polyester leisure suits?

So far the best answer seems to be the Wendigo. And I've gotta' say that the guy really gets around ... he's pretty much a globetrotter.
I am surprised by the overall lack of coverage about this story in the media.
What puzzles me is - if these sounds are a known phenomenon near the Arctic Circle, then why hasn't someone provided more info. Surely the Intuit people must have a name and a tradition for this sort of thing. And if these sounds are abnormal ... why are they happening now??

Pete2 I don't know about the Intuit people, but the Inuit will probably blame my Newfie relatives and their baked beans.

No problem. I will list your relatives and the baked beans as a possible cause.
I've also had "The Return of Jimi Hendrix" as a possible cause. Apparently someone experienced unusual sounds and colors while attending an old Hendrix concert. I wonder why that was?? Hahahaa!
On the slightly more serious side ... these sounds up in Canada are actually so loud in places that some people are being woken up by them in the middle of the night. Weird stuff.

The Inuit have no history of this because it didn't happen. It is primarily happening now (if it is) due to our modern conductive apparatus that could be excited by the changing magnetic field.
I have seen lots of aurora, near both poles, even in built up areas and never heard anything.
Respectfully,
Jerry

I didn't listen to the whole YouTube. Mos of the sounds I've seen reported seem to be affiliated with northern latitudes.
Is this whole thing an Internet hoax ... it could be. I can't rule that out. Or maybe the result of too many Canadians drinking too many Molson's. Hahaha !!!
