I remember fondly the days when my edc included a comb. Currently the bandanna serves that function. *sigh*

My edc has changed considerably since moving from chicago to tallahassee and thence to west palm beach. I now have fewer pockets and lighter weight, elastic waisted trousers; carrying the boreal forest edc items resulted in a sort of fat, old white guy gangsta look as my shorts subsided to my ankles.

so the edc stuff has migrated into a european shoulder bag/fast action gun bag/man purse. EDC pocket contents now consists of a spyderco police folder with a car key attached, and my house/car key ring. The car key redundancy happened after I locked the murse in the car a Petsmart, along with the keys.

The murse approach is promising, but requires a new level of discipline to consistently wear it.

I tend to take the opposite approach. For me, defensive tools are the same set anywhere modified by what is permissible to carry at the location. I've set it up so that I can drop various levels of items easily to leave them in the trunk or floorboard in small pouches (Maxpedition M-1 & NiteIze Pock-its)

*I've decided to turn this into my urban-suburban hiking kit. I took out the travel mug and shoes and added an esbit stove, gortex jacket, fleece jacket, battery operated chem-style light, extra hat and thermal mechanics gloves.

For an urban-suburban hiking kit, I highly recommend an AM-FM radio. If there's a crisis occurring, you're going to want news.

this was suggested in an earlier thread by someone wiser than I. A leatherman or visegrip might serve the same purpose, of opening the handle-less security hose taps on the outside of commercial buildings. A prohibitively heavy, bigger wrench might be necessary to access fire hydrants, and anyway its hard to fill a water bottle from them without getting damp.

Nursemike, I'm an idiot. I have old cast-iron hot water radiators in my house with 1/4" sillcock vent valves on them (why they can't have something you can get a wrench or normal socket on, I don't know). I've been buying packs of cheap pot metal keys for years that split after a few uses. Not too bad if your last one splits while trying to open the valve, but when you're trying to tighten it... Now I'm going to go out and buy the one you linked to, thanks!

I like the ideas. My urban EDC on my person is a work in progress. I can't bring myself to be satisfied with it.

several companies offer multitools with blasting cap crimping jaws... how close would one of these be for the valve stems you need to control?
