Looks like the very lightweight and inexpensive SU-16 will
be offered in 300 AAC Blackout. This means it will be legal
in more places for big game and still have light, inexpensive and compact ammo. Should be good for a survival gun for shorter
ranges.

Based on what I'm reading I should be able to replace my 5.56mm barrel with a 300 BLK barrel for a painless conversion.

Are you reading that you can swap out your SU-16 5.56 barrel with a 300 BLK barrel?

The 300blk is quite interesting to me.

It seems to offer roughly .30-30 performance in a much smaller and potentially less expensive form factor (considering .300blk is basically a .223 cartridge with a .308 bullet).

That means it could end up being an excellent hunting cartridge for the same type of game one would use .30-30 on (like Deer).

As another added benefit, it will work in any firearm .223 will, as long as you can switch out the barrels and ensure proper headspace. No need for special magazines and bolts.

All in all, it sounds like it has the potential to become a very popular cartridge if they're able to market it to the hunting community and not just the 'tacticool' market.

That's what I've read. Won't know for sure until it comes out.

It's been awhile since I was on the KTOG SU-16 forum. I had the impression from your statement that my -16 could be converted to take the 300 BLK. Seems the factory is using the basic frame and putting a 300 BLK barrel in it, along with a compact forend, to make the SU-300BLK. Still won't be able to swap out barrels/forends like the AR.

There is a lot of interest in this conversion. Will be interesting to follow it's progress.

That's contrary to what I read, but KTOG is more likely to have the right story. I should have thought to look there.

Oh well, another excuse to buy a gun :-).

I'd rather leave CA and buy an AR upper. I'll leave my SU-16CA as is.

The uppers will have to get cheaper before I'll be able to get one. When I saw how much a complete AR in 300 BLK cost I just about spat my drink. The new Kel-Tec looks better and better.

Don't get me wrong, I love how the straighter walled cartridge allows for use in an AR magazine instead of needing to go full-on banana, but ballistically it just seems to me like a 7.62 x 39... only a lot more expensive.

I do love that they're giving users other options of course, the only way to make 300 blackout less expensive and more prevalent is of course to make more firearms in the caliber so the demand goes up.
