As I've mentioned Elsewhere, -I'm Moving any Stone Mountain Discussion as may have Begun, -Over Here, -into it's own Thread. If you Too Have any Experiences on the Stone, -or would Otherwise Like to Join In, -This is the Place.
I myself had Long Had some Yen to Go Down there! A Best Friend had Moved Down There some Years Before, -and While That is Part of It, -That's also Largely Beside the Point. I'd Want to Go Down to Check Out,-and Climb!, -the "Stone",-in Any Event.
As Many of you Know, -It's a Quite Unique, Stand Alone, Mountain!, -some 16 miles East of Atlanta. It's a Granite Outcrop, a Monadnock. Some Ancient, -Once Molten Magma,-which Remained Long After All Overlying Materials had Eroded Off. Though of course a Part of the Appalachians,-It also Stands Well Apart from It! -Well Past "the Flat Part of Atlanta"! It's Not Terribly High,-even for an Appalachian,-But It's also No Midget either! It's Standalonedness, -Particularly in a Flatland,-Contributes to this Effect as Well!
A Giant Carving of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jeff Davis Stands Prominently on one of It's Faces,-but I was Not There,-It was Getting Toward Dusk on that August Night, -and I Never Did get to See that Part. ( I am a Yankee,-BTW,-and While I Give All Due Respect and Regard to the South,-I am Glad we of the North Won!, -Not the Least Reason Being the Very Preservation of our Union! ),-This Great Sculpture was Not a Part of my Experience.
I was at Stone Mountain At Long Last! There was More than a Little Daylight Left, -I was Going to Climb It! It was Only Several Times Taller, -than some of my Tallest Hills, Back at Home, -It was the Relatively Easy, Western Tourist Route, and it would be Perfectly OK,-even in Dusk and Darkness. I was Fit Enuf and Looking Forward to It!, -The Mountain Beckoned!, -" Because It is There !," -and So On Up I Went! It was also my First Experience of Ever Climbing a Mountain,-Something that I had Long Been Looking Forward To! (Despite the Fact that I'm only 50 Miles from the Apps Back at Home, -I Had Been There,-but Never Had the Oppurtunity to Actually Climb One.)
And so as Summertime Dusk Approached and Gathered,-Onward Up that Granite I Went. -Easy Mountaineeering Event!, -Great and Significant Enuf Personal Event! Much of that Western Approach is a Gentle to Medium Grade, -but Not Always Lacking in some Ruffness! As I've said Elsewhere,-It is Pure, Smooth, Unadulterated Granite Underfoot,-and All Around. (A Patch or Two of Pines Exists on a Part of the Mtn,-but that's Very Atypical!) I've Grown Up around Soil All my Life!,- It was a New and Different Experience,-on All This Rock! -But a Great and Enjoyable One as Well! (Nor was I Exactly Used To All that Red, Georgia Soil All Over the Atlanta Area!,-Back Where I Come From,-It's Black and Brown!,-Like "Real Soil's" Suspossed to Look!) But Here on the Mountainside, - Pure Gray,-All Around. There's are some Steeper, Ruff Parts,-on your Way Up. -Until you Get to a Really Steeper, Rounded Stretch,-Up Near the Top.
Then The Summit!,-or as Near to It as I could Get!,-I Think that It Itself was Fenced Off,-and Inaccessable from the Trail. I could See that Top Building or Tower,-Not All that Far Away. I Hung Around a Good While! Daylight Turned to Dusk to Darkness. There was still enuf Light Around, as to be No Problem. The View Down and All Around!, -The View of Atlanta in the Far Off Distance, -The Horizon and Skyline All Around, -The Summertime Haze Shading Up into the Clearness -Dark Countryside Peppered Here and There with Other, Non-Atlanta, Georgia Lights! It's All something to Hang Around For!,-Even on a Nice Georgia Summer Night. The Mountain and Conditions Permitted,-Not Prohibited,-It. You Just Gotta Make Sure you Don't Lose Track of the Trail! For a Few Moments I Did a Bit,-but Soon Enuf again Found It!
After Suitably Savoring the Experience for Awhile,-It was Time to Come Down that Trail once again, -Did So,-and Got Back on the Bus and then onto their Excellent MARTA,-To my Atlanta Area Motel well to the North. Back to Full, Evryday Normalcy, -though a Several Week Trip Away from Ole Home Parts,-Isn't Exactly Full Normaltude.
But I Had Been to Stone Mountain!, -At Long Last! And Climbed It!,-my First Mountain!, Was I Gonna Climb It?! Is the Pope Catholic?,-And Does the Earth Revolve Around the Sun?! OK Then, -"Because It is There!"
I Wasn't as Itching to Do Stone, -as Say I Long and Presently Am, -To Behold Crater Lake Sometime! ( Gotta Go See the Grand Canyon Too! ),-But the Specialness was More Than a Little Bit Up There, Too!
As I've said Elsewhere,-The Thot Really Hit me,-as I was Climbing and Descending, -of What It could Be Dangerously Like!, -To Be Caught in a Downpour!, -on that Mountain! Nothing but Pure Hard, Impenetrable, Granite Rock!, -NO Soil to speak of,-At All! Any Rainfall would Have Absolutely Nowhere to Go!, -but Down and All Around!,-on That Slippery Slope! Check Out the Smooth Slipperyness of that Rock for Yourself,-and See if It Won't Be Slippery when Wet! What's More,-You could Have an Inch or More's Flood to Have to Deal With! Try Keeping your Footing on That! Try to Keep from Sliding and from Being Washed Down the Side!,-in such Conditions! This Smooth Sided Mountain and Face!,-Offers you NO Sharp Rock Handholds or Footholds!
And It's a Plenty Plenty Ruffer Mountain,-on Other Faces! I could Readily See That on It's South Side,-as I Approached.
But I Took the Far Easier, Western, Standard Tourist Trail Up!, -the Only Route so Available to me. (You Certainly Can't Go Violating Established Regulations) Anywhere Else on the Mountain would have been Unacceptable, -and Often Impossible,-in such Gathering Darkness Conditions. Physically,-This Western Route was Like Nothing!
Finally,-There's a Fenced Enclosure or Two,-of Rare Plants Endemic Only to Stone Mountain,-in Rare "Soil Spots". I Got Quite Near One, -and could See the Fencing Up Ahead, -but in the Darkness by Now, -Did Not Want to Lose Touch with the Trail,-Pretty Indistinguishable from the Rest of the Rock Anyway!,-on This Mountainside. -Let Alone Doing so in a Good Deal of Darkness.
And Such is By and Large my Stone Mountain Experience! -How Bout Your's? [color:"black"] ScottRezaLogan

Next time you come south, ask someone to tell you where "Little Stone Mountain" is.

We climbed Stone Mountain back in the mid 90s when my son was in grad school at the University of Georgia (at Athens). If you follow what passes for a trail you go around the fenced area and can reach the top. There's a snack & gift shop at the top. One nice thing about hiking up is that you can sneer at the people that got to the top by riding the tram. Gene

Hi Scott,
I enjoy your posts. If I might add just an observation, though: Your use of capitalization and punctuation is, well, kind of hard to read, sort of like a very long book title. Don't take this the wrong way, but, where did you learn to type that way? It is very interesting. It sure takes a lot more effort to capitalize every initial letter doesn't it? Hey, I'm just trying to save you some work.

Thanks,-and I can see that you live near Stone Mountain yourself.
I've Reassured others of my Writing Style Improvements I've made, -and will Continue to make. I'd like to so Reassure you, as well. Thanks for your Input there, and Constructive Criticism.
As well as you're mentioning that you enjoy my posts.
Technically, -it's Not Every initial letter that I capitalize,-but it is many. I've Evolved into that,-and it's part of my overall Style as a Writer. I once used capital and small letters as anyone else! As I like to say, -if a World Class Writer as e.e. cummings can use small letters, -Then I can use capital ones. Of course, -Part of being a Writer,-is to make things sufficiently and comfortably Readable to one's Audience. I will continue to work towards further reductions in my use of capital letters, -as well as other writing improvements. Thank You on That.
Now let's get on to Talking some more on Stone Mountain!,-if you'd like. Being an Atlantan,-I imagine you've Climbed it yourself, -a good chance more than once. Have you? And if so, -Tell me something of your Experience, Please. I'm Cool!,-whether or Not you have anything to further say on Stone Mountain, -Don't Worry on that anybit! No, it won't get you lynched. Stone Mountain is one huge piece of granite. And I mean HUGE. You can go all over north Georgia and see exposed granite that is part of the same mass. Just east of Stone Mountain is a county called Rockdale. And for good reason. In part of the county, you cannot have a basement even though the land is rolling hills. That is, unless you dynamite out a basement. South of Stone Mountain is a state park called Panola Mountain Park. It too is an exposed granite mass. Since it is similar, it is nicknamed “Little Stone Mountain”. Here is a link about it: Panola Mountain State Park

Scott, thanks for taking my suggestion so graciously. As a technical writer, I've been trained in very specific composition protocols, and it is hard for me to see something outside the scope of that without putting on my proofreader's hat. So, at least I come by it honestly. Yes, I've been up and down Stone Mountain a few times. I've also sat on the huge grassy field at its base and watched the laser show and fireworks that are so popular. Another notable landmark around the greater metro area of Atlanta is Kennesaw Mountain, the site of historic battles during the Civil War ( http://www.nps.gov/kemo/index.htm). Kennesaw presents more of a hiking challenge than Stone Mountain, depending on the route you select. My brother-in-law and I routinely take dayhikes around the Kennesaw Mountain area, but usually limit our trek to 12 miles or so. There are over 30 miles of hiking that could be done on the trails in that area. Anyway, yes, Stone Mountain is a must-see part of any trip to Georgia. I'm a proud native Georgian, and it impresses me every time I go.

Scott--
I'll second the "observation" on your writing/typing style. I find it very difficult to read. Our conventions of style developed to make things easier to read, not more difficult.
Would you consider being more conventional in your posts to these fora? I, & perhaps others, would appreciate it. If not, I'll still read your posts--it just takes longer, & I tend to skip paragraphs, which will probably cause me to miss something important, at some point.
While I've read ee cummings (he didn't use punctuation, either), I wasn't impressed--nor with T.S. Eliot. Now, Robert Frost, on the other hand... :-)

Rob--
Stone Mountain is an awesome place! The laser show is the best I've ever seen!
I'd been there a couple of times before I got married. My wife & I spent one night there at the inn near the carving on our honeymoon. I was eager for her to see the laser show, though she was more blase' about it, & simply refused to hurry to get a spot on the lawn, thus causing us almost to miss it. However, once the show started, her jaw dropped & she sat in almost stunned silence for the duration.
We've since been back several times. (As an aside, we found out after our honeymoon that my wife's grandparents had gone to Stone Mountain, and seen the original Confederate memorial carving. Rob't E. Lee's head & hat were all that were completed at the time--early 1930s. Her granddaddy wanted to know if "they'd ever finished it." He had one of the silver half-dollars minted there as a souvenir. )
Is Mama Mia's Italian restaurant still on the main street in the Village of Stone Mountain? How about Chili Chompers? Mama Mia's was one of the best Italian restaurants we've found, & Chili Chompers was a specialty hot-sauce & pepper item store.

Thanks, David, and Yes, Will Do. It's been much Improving, and Will Continue to Do so! I've Reassured a number of People on this lately, and I'm Glad to So Reassure you as well.
With a Few particular "Real Doozie" examples people've lately shown me, -It's Very Understandable, -if some People have been Turned Off from Reading my Posts. Many Surprisingly Enuf have Not been Turned Off so!
I'm gonna Give You, They, and Others a Better, Easier Read, than You at Times have been getting.
I've Received some Pretty Good, Helpful Advice, Along with what has Occurred to me on my Own, and I'm Implementing and Incorporating It! Thanks for all Helpful Advice and Constructive Criticism.
I've mentioned Things along these Lines, in a Number of Response Posts such as This. If People would Refer to Those, You can Know that Scott here is Already Well Aware, and you Won't so much have to Try to "Reach me" on This! ( NOT that Constr. Cmmnts. and All aren't Welcome, -To the Contrary and Far From It! That Continues.) But it's NOT a case of my being Unaware at All! I Have Well Taken Note, and Continue to Concretely and Gladly Do something about It.
I've Today got the Idea, to Write Up a Brief Summary, of some of my "Worst Offenders", and to Place them near the appropriate Post and into their appropriate Thread. For Anyone's Easier Reading, on Such. It's Coming some time.
But Please, Anyone yet Trying to Bring This to my Attention, -Refer to Reply Posts such as This, and Know that I'm Already Aware!, and Onto this Ball and Bean!
Finally, All my Due Apologies, and Those are More than only a Few.
P.S. -Yes Too!, concerning Robert Frost. I particularly Like their many References to Him in one of my Favorite Movies, -"Telefon", -Chuck Bronson & Lee Remick, ( And we Can't Forget that Dalmchimsky Guy!), 1977 or so. Where They Plentifully Quote Mr. Frost, -" The Woods are Lovely, Dark, and Deep, -but I've Got Promises to Keep, -and Miles to Go, -Before I Sleep! " [color:"black"] David

Blue Flame may be the Vehicle here, But This is to All, particularly you Bostonians and New Englanders. Atlanta and the South's got It's Stone, You've got your Big Blue Hill. I know It Isn't All that Much, Especially when Stacked Next to Stone! ( Smile, Lite Humor, and All!), -But How's Things On and About Boston's Big Blue Hill?! ( I once Heard that a Hoax Went Around to the Effect that It Erupted!) I Mean this All as a Respectful, Light Ribbing!
Seriously, though, While It MITE Not exactly be a Climber's Rock or Anything, -I Don't Know, This is One Reason I now Ask, -Describe something of It for me, -if you could!
P.S.- And Let's All Keep Talking about the Stone Too! To the Extent Anyone Wishes to, / Has Anything Furthur to Say. I by No Means, Have Closed This Good Ole One Out! The Stone's Still Open! [color:"black"] BlueFlame

BlueFlame Ah...to be honest...I'm not exactly sure I understand what you are asking me to describe. Maybe something got lost in the translation? If you mean Panola Mountain, I believe I did describe it. It's a small Stone Mountian - without the tourist stuff. If you are referring to “Big Blue Hill”? Never been there.

No, I was Asking people among us in General, though Technically it was thru this Reply to, & thru, you. I mentioned that there, Sorry for any Misunderstanding.
I Know that that one, the Blue Mtn. that I'm speaking of, Isn't in your Territory or Neck of the Woods. I was Asking for the Guys up in *It's* Area to do the Describing.
My Apology for such Misunderstanding / Being any bit Less than Clear.
You most certainly Did Describe Panola or Little Stone Mountain, and I clicked onto your Link. I Enjoyed Looking It over. Arabia Mountain in particular Intrigues me.
I'd also had Forgotten how Much of North Georgia, as well as Parts of some Neighboring States, is Also Underlain by the Same Stone and Little Stone Granite, -Until you Mentioned It. I now Recall having Learned that, when I was Down there.
Your Talking of Rock County too!, was Interesting and New to me.
I was a Little Concerned or Uncomfortable as I was Addressing our Gang as a Whole, thru a Reply to your Post on this Thread. It was at the Time the Last One there, and even a Newbie as me, kind of thinks that this is what we Conventionally Do! I may be Right or Wrong about that, but I Don't think I'm exactly Wrong. I took Care to mention this as Clear as I can Up Front. But I Regret once again, and am Sorry for, any Honest Misunderstanding as Well May have Occurred.
Worry None,-It Wasn't you Blue!, -It was to some of our Folks,-More Up in It's,-the Blue Hill's, -Neck of the Woods! That Does Not happen to be in your Georgia!
Again, -All of my Due Apologies! [color:"black"] BlueFlame

I understand that at least part of your post was directed at everyone. But making my name stand out as a "mailto" link is what made me think you were asking a question specifically of me.
Hope you find out about "Big Blue Hill".
