A new entrant in the PLB wars is claiming to be the world's smallest and lightest Personal Locator Beacon, eclipsing the current record holder. The SATRO PLB-110 from Astronics DME Corporation certainly seems to have a good basis for that claim. We take a first look at this new PLB that should be available by Spring of 2012.

All I see at the link is the ETS banner. Am I missing something?

I just tried the link again and it looks fine, on both FireFox and IExplorer.

Dave rebooted Apache, but we still have no idea why it is doing this. It did it last night for a while and then was fine. Driving me nuts!

It's working fine, BUT there seems to be a typo:

Quote:
Thet PLB-110 is rated to transmit at a minimum of 5 watts throught it’s battery life and it is rated for 24 hours at -20C (-4F). Its depth rating is 10 meters (32.8 ft) for 5 minutes and 1 meter (3.28 ft) for an hour.

Thanks. That's what happens when you don't have a copy editor...

That's what are loyal readers for. wink

In all seriousness, posts such as this one on the new PLB are greatly appreciated.

Very interesting that they chose more of a flat rectangular footprint rather than the more square design of the competition. I'm a little concerned about the durability of a case of this design to withstand impact. At the same time, the flat design would appear to be more "pocketable" which means that it is more likely to be kept on the person.

I will certainly want to hear more about this product as it comes closer to launch.

The bottom line is any PLB has to meet the same standards, so regardless of how they got there it still has to be reasonably robust.
