Thanks for the baking soda trick. That one is new to me, although we use baking soda for a lot of other things.

We also use wipes. Generic cheapies. Lightly antiseptic and not very tough, but they get the job done. Two can give you a pretty good cleaning without using any water (much lighter to carry) and does a lot to reduce the discomfort of desert living.

Cheap too. So we (being retired and "thrifty") use them a lot when in the field.

Susan:

I am so relieved that you don't take the pedestal, and you can always use the basin to do an "Oddjob" (From Goldfinger.) number on any bears.

hygine in the field is often an overlooked subject.as a former light infantryman i know what a great feeling it is to wipe yourself down with soap and washcloth and brush your teeth what a plus...also i still find camp suds to be the best soap for me in the field..vince

While were on the subject of hygiene and outdoor persuits, rather than have a birdbath, why not have a hot shower?
I'm sure even the hardest old soldier wouldn't say no...
Anyway I haven't bought one myself, but its one up on the solar-bag shower.
Then again I have my macho pride to consider...
