I've heard that 1-K (or K-1) kerosene doesn't smell, and is ultra low in sulfur and nitrogen. You can also buy special fragrances to add to kerosene.

Or reduced-odor mineral oil.

Any lantern that uses a mantel should burn odorless and without soot.

Keep your wicks trimmed.
