Keep up the good work! The 5 WPM code test really isn't all that difficult. It's slow enough to where you can decipher it even if all you've done is memorize the code chart. Higher speeds require you to actually recognize the letters by sound...nice if you can do it, but probably overkill if you never intend to use it. God knows I've done my best to forget it! Get yourself some good code tapes (Radio Shack sells them) and you'll be ready in no time. 73's!

There are quite a few hams on this board.

I would encourage everyone to get their Technician licenses. A buddy of mine who was into climbing was the one who first encouraged me to get my license. He has used his 2m/440 HT for emergency and non-emergency communications several times while out climbing.

Other radio services such as FRS, GMRS, MURS and CB will probably be useful as well, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. I have radios covering all of them, so I use what's appropriate for any given conditions.

Good luck!

This is all great advice and a lot to consider. I've started asking around work here (a university in a research lab) and have found some good resources here. The university has a club and the licensing tests are offered here monthly.

My little .5 watt and 1watt "toy" radios have never failed while communitcating to my climbing partner, but we often go where there is no cell coverage and I think both of us having a more powerful radio is a good idea. Not so much to talk to each other as to reach the outside world and be in touch with the latest weather and avalanche info.

The comments on receiving more first responder training are thoughtful. I don't think I want to pursue being "officially certified" right now. I'm in no danger of being sued if I resond as a good samaritan and do what I can. Most states have good samaritan laws covering situations like that. Being certified can actually work against you if you aren't on a SAR team. You now have a standard of training and if you screw up, then you can be sued like crazy. I appreciate the input and will pursue this someday, but I have reservations in some regards. I guess I'm not interested in the additional resonsibility just yet.

Thank you for the input everyone.
