There are a ton of freebies out there. A couple of the ones I have installed on my Android phone are:
1. US Army Survival Manual (23 chapters plus appendices)
2. Survival Guide (US Military Survival Manual FM 21-76)
3. Daily Survival Tips (submitted by survival enthusiasts)

1 and 2 may be redundant...

The last one I present with caveats. While a number of the tips are useful, some are also dangerous and send out mixed or incorrect information. Use with care. The real usefullness of these tips is that it keeps you thinking everyday about survival issues and thus keeps you on your toes.

[*]ElectroDroid, Electronics Tool Box - apps aiding with electronics devices improvisation.
[*]EMF Detector - basic metal finder app.
[*]GPS Essentials - various GPS tools collection.

I have several dedicated GPS mapping apps as well. Using Evernote to collect and organize everyday data as it's coming in. Using SPB Wallet to store sensitive information (e.g. passwords, lock combinations, credit cards, e.t.c.).

By the way, if anyone have an idea of a survival app - let's discuss. I can make your idea a reality on Android Platform (perhaps for iPhone too).

Just downloaded TeslaLED last night. $1.00 donation...so not free but it doesn't ask for ridiculous special permissions either. Modes include regular flashlight, auto off after 1 min, strobe (adjustable rate), continuous SOS mode (includes beeps), touch-on mode (must touch screen to activate and as soon as you stop it is off), auto screen brightness, and "police lights" (flashing red & blue patterns). Will be testing them outdoors in dark this week.

BTW, I should add that I have a Droid Razr Maxx...simply for the battery capacity. I don't like the iphones. If the Samsung Galaxy Siii had the razr maxx battery I'd have that. I do travel with a Nomad 7 Solar Panel ( Nomad 7 http://www.goalzero.com/shop/p/11/Nomad-7-Solar-Panel/6:3/) by Goal Zero (http://www.goalzero.com/). So, outside of getting stuck in a tunnel or cave, I can solve the smart phone power drain issue.

Search the Google Play Store (really dumb name!) using the term "foraging". Lots of good survival apps from free to about $8.00, including the USMC Summer Survival Handbook (free).

We just started trying "iTriage" first aid app. Initial impressions are that it seems pretty helpful in terms of diagnosis and explainations.

I have no is where found them, other than in the android app store, but my hubby surprised me with "230+ survival book" as well as slimmed down versions of the SAS Survival Guide and the Zombie Handbook.

I'm such a non-teckie though. Is a book an app?
