Hmmmm, lessee, never heard before in 29 years....yet has perfectly intelligible speech production ("It's beeping" she clearly says)....can understand the tester when she speaks to her without using any lipreading cues at all.....yet has never heard at all, never any auditory speech or language input, but still has managed to develop normal voice quality and speech production, and speech understanding skills after just one second listening through this hearing device.....??

to save having to find it:

Sarah Churman, 29, was born deaf. Until recently, she had never heard the sound of her own voice. But thanks to a hearing implant, Churman was able to experience a miracle.

She says on her YouTube channel that she's worn hearing aids since she was two years old and has gotten by on reading lips.

Churman goes on to explain the background behind her clear speech:

"My whole life I've been complimented on how well I speak. I don't really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English. My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound. I've worked very hard to be able to interact and blend in."

OK, but quoting the heading on the video:

"29 year old Sarah Churman was born deaf and lived her entire life in virtual silence."

But according to Churman's own description, the above is not accurate. Videos of this type, with misleading info, in some ways do a disservice to the public, leaving them with misconceptions instead of useful knowledge.

Apparently the truth is that this woman did hear pretty well with hearing aids for most of her life, well enough to develop very good speech and language skills, and now she apparently hears even better with her implant. That's excellent.

Don't expect pinpoint accuracy from the typical media story. They often mess up on important details and frequently fail to dig deep enough to develop a really accurate picture. There are exceptions, but they are rare.
