was reportedly cocking his crossbow when he accidentally fired the bolt through his left foot, pinning it to the floor of the ATV. Without having used a crossbow, it seems like it would be common sense to cock the weapon BEFORE you load it.

I for one would like a few more details and a little background on crossbows and their use. Note that the victim is a parapalegic - how does that affect the situation?

Note that the victim is a parapalegic - how does that affect the situation? Why would a paraplegic go out hunting alone? What was his plan if he had pinned his foot to a log? Same town, same name, right age... same guy?: Two critically injured in single-car accident Sue

I would imagine a paraplegic would go out hunting for many of the same reasons a non-paraplegic would go out hunting alone - enjoy the solitude, etc.- who knows?
What is alone in this context, anyway. Note that his friends came to his aid, evidently fairly soon. This suggests that they were not too far away and perhaps had a fairly good notion of his whereabouts.
My point is that typical news stories are far too sketchy to form the basis for a reasonable analysis of the situation, and if you really what to figure out what is going on, you need more information than is generally available from the media.
Of course, that never inhibits us, does it?
It looks like the JC of 2007 could indeed be the hunter in this story. Your point being? - perhaps that accident is the reason he is now a paraplegic. Who knows?

Being a paraplegic would really change the composition of your PSK! While the Rule of Threes applies to everyone, not being able to walk would present some unique challenges. A mechanical breakdown, while inconvenient at a minimum for someone that can walk, would be especially problematic. I can appreciate the fact that I wouldn't want to allow my disabilities to dictate my life, but I'd be sure to have a PLB in such a situation. Doubling up on the signaling stuff would be a wise idea.
And maybe steel toed boots...something crossbow proof!

My point was that he may make a habit of not thinking things through very well, if at all. If he was hunting deer, I wonder how he was going to handle it?
A paraplegic isn't going to have all the same options as more mobile people, is he?

He belonged to a Hunt Club,I'm wondering who in the club checked his ability to hunt?Typically,Hunting season is during the rut,who determined he was able to climb a tree/avoid a ticked-off or wounded Buck,or track a wounded deer by his lonesome? He would make an easy meal for wild hogs,North Florida has a whole lot of em',& they rarily travel alone, but even so,some wild hogs tilt the scale over 1000lbs,thats big enough to make Rambo soil his drawers!Unless daddy is a board member or higher in rank, who in that Hunt Club would let a fellow member, being a paraplegic, hunt alone?
