Good tips were stay a foot away from the walls; bullets skim along them.
Bullets tend to either bounce off walls or embed themselves therein, not skim them. I'd like to see a source on that.
And when the cops find you; have your hands visible and don't make any sudden moves.

"Hey Grimsey, stay off the walls." Bullets hug walls, supposedly.
From the US Army FM 3-06.11:
"The soldier should try to stay 12 to 18 inches away from walls when moving; rubbing against walls may alert an enemy on the other side, or, if engaged by an enemy, ricochet rounds tend to travel parallel to a wall."
