Not much info so far but I'm guessing its the same sad story. The desert is an unforgiving environment.

It certainly is during the summer - forgiveness comes with the rains of winter.

RIP. Dang.

Reminds me I'd better check my earthquake water supplies.

Such a sad case. That has to be a horrible way to die.

If this story is accurate, it seems they were terribly ill prepared. They died of heat stroke in less than 6 hours?

Quote:

The couple, whose names have not yet been released by authorities, had only been in the park a little more than six hours before the first body was discovered.

"They checked into the ranger station shortly before noon the day they were found," Gregory said. "They were staying in the valley and traveling to Arizona. They took an unplanned side trip that went terribly awry."

The area where the bodies were found is remote, so remote that a sign warns drivers must have a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Called Black Eagle Mine Road, it's lined with creosote and smoke trees. Lizards skitter across.

Monday evening, as the day's high of 106 degrees was winding down, a couple visiting the park came across a dead man on the edge of the road.

About a mile east on the same road, there was a dead woman.

Five more miles east, a stranded car.

At the end is a locked gate. Behind it, abandoned mines.

“It's not surprising at all,” said Steve Jenkins, who was taking inventory of the park's abandoned mines Tuesday for the California Department of Conservation.

“They're 8 miles in, no shade, no one around,” he said. “They're going to get fried.

Wow! I hate to judge and, granted, I'm a self-confessed over-prepper, but how can anyone be in an area like that and be so unprepared? Other than possibly two medical conditions, it's senseless to me. Brought water but didn't realize how much they'd need? Didn't think about the best way to deal with the heat? Didn't think about a vehicle breakdown in such a remote place? Didn't realize it was so remote?

Oh my. I'm canceling my weekend trip to Death Valley. A heatwave of 123F is coming in there. Except the usual "plenty of water" and "full body cover" rules are there any other tips on how to fight the heat hiking in such conditions?

Unplanned sidetrip... words to die by if you're not prepared and uninformed.

Sounds like solid advice.

I guess it's pretty easy to make a wrong decision for someone who is not experienced. It's a national park and there are roads and ranger stations and such, so it doesn't feel very wild or remote. There were signs recommending 4wd, but the government likes to treat people like babies so many people don't take these signs seriously. When their car got stuck I imagine it was probably very hot inside the car. Maybe they figured that if it's hot anyway, might as well start walking. Walking actually doesn't seem that difficult at first. When I lived further south I was able to easily walk 1 hour in that weather. Of course 1 hour on pavement is not the same as 6 hours on sand, but by the time they realized it they might have been too far from the car.

Incidentally, what are some strategies to stay cool in a broken down car in a desert? Cover the car with tarp or mylar, open the doors, have ice in portable freezer. Any other ideas?
