Howdy all,

Couple of years ago, there was a good discussion in here about a 100 pushup program that was available on the web. I back burnered it for a while and a while turned into 2 years. frown I want to get started on it. I see that it is now available in hard copy thru Amazon. Does anyone know if there is anything in the hard copy not available on line? Is it worth the 10 bucks or so?

Thanks,
LW

I'm going to have to search this one. Sounds intriguing!

I think I was the one that started that thread. For the life of me I can't think of a reason buying the book would be worth it. The website is still up: http://hundredpushups.com/week1.html

I did quickly see an improvement in my ability to do pushup...at first. After 3-4 weeks I hit a plateau and improvement slowed to a crawl. Around week five I hurt my wrist (unrelated to the workout) and couldn't do pushups for over a year.

For what it's worth I'm currently doing this: http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/training-day/201108/lose-fat-2-exercises

Here is something that worked for me. As soon as you get up in the morning do the following: 30 secs of push-ups; rest 30 secs; 30 secs push-ups; rest 30 secs; 30 secs push-ups. Amazingly enough you will see pretty rapid improvement. I know I did 100 push-ups on a challenge from a coworker. I cannot remember how long I had been doing the program, but I did the push-ups. He gave me a six-pack of the beverage of my choice: Pepsi.

I was very active with it during the original thread, I too reached an impassable workout back then. This is really funny to see come up because I just resumed this program 4 weeks ago as well as the armstrong pullup program. I have not missed a workout on either. I've had to repeat several workouts before completion and moving on. this mornign I just completed week 3 day 1 (third column) after third attempt. On pullups I can do 10 straight on my first set of day one. that program is awesome too!

just failed week 3 day 2 this morning. only got to 14 in the final set. probably take a few more days to get past it. I'm determined to see how far I can go this time

This is a survival website, and I figure overall strength is more useful for survival than is being great in one exercise. While 100 push-ups is a noble goal for motivating yourself, there are more productive ways to build strength. Being able to say you can do 100 push-ups is mostly for bragging rights. If you're like me, you care less about bragging rights, and more about overall strength.

Nowadays, for strength building, I mainly do Grease the Groove, instead of spending large blocks of time in the gym. Grease the Groove allows me to be more consistent. My main exercises are push-ups, pull-ups and dips. Once I reach a plateau, I inject a more difficult exercise variation. For example, search "push-up variation" on Youtube.

For overall strength, I think it's better to workout with many exercise variations. I have found this tends to make me pretty good in a lot of different exercises, and not exceptional in any one movement. My maximums are about 60 push-ups, 16 pull-ups, and 35 dips. I workout with different variations of these exercises. I think that's pretty good overall, but nothing for bragging if we're considering the exercises individually. By the way, I recommend Youtube for keeping yourself humble! cool

I feel like I'm building useful strength more efficiently by focusing on variety. I can also gauge my balance better. For example, I feel like my pushing strength is disproportionately stronger than my pulling strength. I'd like to increase my pull-ups to 20 reps max before I increase my pushing strength.

You're right - if you're working out, youtube videos will keep you humble.

Tom, how do you only have like 200 posts? I feel like I see your name all over the forum.
