Best thing I have done is purchase the cheapo multi LED 3AAA Cell Flashlights and place a few in strategic spots. When the power is out they are always there. Recently I found at my local dollar store a 3LED 3AAA cell flashlight that is decent in construction. I personally wouldn't Rely On it alone but for 1$ you can easily put one in every room of the house at the right spots to use the instant the power go's out and get yourself to the good stuff safely.
