Best thing I have done is purchase the cheapo multi LED 3AAA Cell Flashlights and place a few in strategic spots. When the power is out they are always there. Recently I found at my local dollar store a 3LED 3AAA cell flashlight that is decent in construction. I personally wouldn't Rely On it alone but for 1$ you can easily put one in every room of the house at the right spots to use the instant the power go's out and get yourself to the good stuff safely.

anybody have a heads up on a <$20 LED AA headlamp? Searching for " LED headlamp AA" and sorting by price found a number of options. Granted, I have no idea which are actually trustworthy products. Headlamps are tricky buggers to figure out quality wise. I have 2 TWO Streamlight headlamps and neither work even tho they seem to display a decent quality.

Weird- I have three Streamlight headlamps (1 CR123A & 2 AA) and they're all money in the bank.

Headlamps are tricky buggers to figure out quality wise. I have 2 TWO Streamlight headlamps and neither work even tho they seem to display a decent quality.
There is a glut of headlamps and LED lights on the market today, and they all kind of look alike. Fortunately, construction materials, dimensions, power source, controls, ratings of runtime and lumens are starting to appear in the advertising and on packaging. There are also a lot of user-submitted ratings and reviews available online to keep the OEM's honest. I think in this competitive environment for little money you can get what you want with a lot of research and a little luck.

If you folks need a good online battery and lighting vendor, try these companies: http://www.batteryjunction.com (great selection on lights AND batteries) They have excellent prices for batteries of all types, including rechargeables. Bought many items from them. They are prompt and their service is excellent. Another one that I have done business with is: http://www.lighthound.com ( great light selection) Their service is also excellent. Hope this helps the folks that have to buy batteries from brick and mortar stores at inflated prices.

My advice on headlamps, being the owner of several, and gawker of dozens more, is pony up and buy a Petzel Tikka 2 or Tikka Plus 2 (w/ red light). Really any of the Tikka line is top notch. Its way over you'r budget, $40 vs. $20 but it is pretty much a top 3 or better headlamp on the market. Invest the extra money up front and you won't be buying another one later when the cheaper one bellys up on you.

If you are tired of any old flashlights that run on AA batteries, put some Energizer AA alkalines in them and let them sit for 4-6 months or so. My experience has been that the batteries will leak and wreck the flashlights, then you can send the lights to Energizer with the leaking batteries and they'll compensate you. If I recall correctly, I think they actually send you a check for the approximate amount it would cost you to replace the flashlight. This has happened to me twice. I only use Duracells now unless I want to get rid of an old flashlight, in which case I switch to Energizers. Funny that you say that. The only times I've ever had a good light ruined by leaky batteries it was Energizers. They ruined my Browning (OEM'ed by Pelican) SabreLite and a Mag-Lite. I'm telling you. If you still have the lights, go online and look for the Energizer mailing address, and send the flashlights back to them with the corroded batteries inside. I think the last time I did this was a year or so ago with a Gerber AA LED flashlight. Their AA alkaline batteries may be shift, but they've been 100% good on their word to compensate for the ruined flashlights.

Okay, I am old fashioned, I guess, but dishonesty seems the wrong lesson to promote. Legitimate invocation of warranties or whatever, fine; intentionally damaging stuff, not so fine. Rant over.

I honestly thought that it would be OK to put Energizers in my costly flashlights. Who wouldn't trust a bunny?

comms... yea I know... most of the Rangers I talked to at Ft Benning are carrying the Petzel...I have to upgrade the SureFires to LED anyway, so will just order one... thanks for all the help
it appears that tropical storm season is really upon us
