Bare in mind that when you try to use the torch, it won't work. You'll have to remember what you did, which may be difficult if several years have gone by, and then reverse it again, which may be difficult in the dark. And you might be in a hurry, if the power outage coincides with some kind of emergency.

(I like torches, and I usually (eg, right now), have at least two on my person.)

Recall is not difficult if last-battery-reversal is your invariable habit - and the non-working "torch" should be a reminder. Switching the last battery around should not normally be a big challenge, though I concede if an emergency has disabled one hand-arm you now have two problems.

In a power outage situation, hopefully you have deployed one or more of the rechargeable emergency lights that only come on when power goes out.

Finally, ETS has The Big Flashlight Thread and I'm on vacation. If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

A few thoughts:

* I do not buy alkaline batteries any more. Lithium batteries have higher energy density, lower self-discharge, and do not leak. Alkaline batteries will always leak if you wait long enough. I buy Energizer Lithiums exclusively for AA and AAA primaries.

* Eneloops are good. I use them in pairs so the included charger works well for me. If you use them singly you're better off buying a charger that has a channel for each cell.

* If you use CR123A cells for anything that takes more than one, buy and use a pulse-load battery tester (I use this one http://www.batteryjunction.com/zts-mbt.html). Other kinds of testers are not accurate. When loading two or more CR123A cells into a device, make sure they're the same manufacturer, lot, and level of charge -- I test them even when new. A sufficiently dissimilar state of charge can lead to "venting with flame" which is unpleasant.

* Batteryjunction.com is great for primaries, rechargeables, chargers, and battery testers. No affiliation other than as a long-time satisfied customer.

* Nothing beats an LED for an emergency flashlight. They use less power and the emitters are far more durable than incandescents.

* In addition to EDC, I have spare flashlights in my laptop bag, my BOB, my wife's BOB, and so on.

* When you're stuck in the dark, the flashlight that's 10 feet away is too far, you need one on your person.

* Having spare flashlights to lend out makes a lot of things easier.

I agree 200% on this! Whenever the weather looks power knocking out levels i grab a flashlight and slip it in my pocket.

I reverse battery my secondary line of flashlights, the ones that are placed around the house for urgent need. I do a single wrap of blue painters tape around the lens or tube & write on it that the batterys have been reversed for power savings. Especially good when little tykes like to play with flashlights.

Whole family recognizes the meaning and when needed, rips off tape and batterys around for use.

Reversing one battery is a good compromise for people like me who are simply not going to do periodic replacement of batteries on "secondary" flashlights. If I ever start doing maintenance at that level, then I first need to be more consistent with draining my water heater, cleaning house gutters, staining my fence, regenerating my water softener, etc.

Surefire has put out some ridiculously bright flashlights in the past. For civilians they sold one called "The Beast" that put out over 2,000 lumens. For military and police, they have a weapons mounted light called the "Hellfighter" that's over 3,000 lumens.

Here's a picture of The Beast in action. The little lights are normal spelunkers headlamps, the Beast is the one lighting up the ceiling.
