A homemade stretcher could be made from double layers of ripstop nylon with an attached flap from the bottom to turn it into a pocket for a travois, or just to keep the dog secure. Wide sleeves on each side could accommodate scrounged poles (secure with cable ties to prevent slipping if used as a travois).

There are also those one-wheeled deer trolley things, but they're probably too bulkly for everyday, what-if use.

But even a tarp or blanket would do in a pinch.

If a person wanted to be more pro-active on paw injuries, get some dog boots and get your pup used to wearing them.
