It's better than it used to be. A LOT better. Sure it looks the way the TV portrays it. You just have to catch it the day or 2 after a good rain. Then the smog creeps back in. Regarding LA: I hate traffic. I don't really like having to drive 30 minutes to get anywhere (OK, some things are only 10 minutes away, but still). I hate that, at any time of the day, the I-5 is a parking lot. that being said, there's things I don't like about Philly and Detroit too, both places I've lived for 2 years. Hampton Roads has its problems. Heck, even rural Missouri had 1 or 2 issues. There's things to hate about every location. The trick is finding all the cool things that outweigh them.

Too many people. No , I take that back. Too many self-centered, narcisitic, borderline sociopaths. I've never really run into this in the smaller towns, but cram a couple million people together like sardines, and things go to h***.
IMHO, the worst seems to be big tourist destinations like Las Vegas and South Florida.

Biggest annoyance for me was the lights and noise. Haven't spent much time in big cities but I clearly remember the lights and noise. At 2AM there were still, heavy trucks, blinking lights, sirens, people talking, headlights swinging past the windows, traffic, commotion, streetlamps humming, and people clomping up and down the stairs. Fairly quiet at 4AM it never got really quiet and it never got dark.
Living in the country I get country dark and quiet. Nature isn't silent but you can hear crickets and sometimes even an owl quietly beat the wind flying close past my window. And you can always tell when larger critters, including humans, approach because the crickets and tree frogs go silent.

When I was a kid living in the sticks of Iowa, we always thought that if we had only good and pure thoughts, went to church 3 times a week, prayed 5 times a day, gave 10% of whatever we had to the Lord, and became Born Again Christians, when we died we'd go to Pasadena. On New Years Day, in the middle of a blizzard in below zero temperatures and howling winds, the Rose Bowl Parade sure looked like Heaven to us.
Somehow, without actually dying, I managed to get somewhat near Pasadena almost 25 years ago now, and my pain threshold thankfully still seems at it's former Iowa level. However, if I found out I had to return to Iowa, for sure I would think that I had well and truly expired, and also failed miserably in my attempts at piety.

I took my wife to her first Rose Parade/Rose Bowl this year. Phenomenal! Though I must admit, the Bowl is a lot tougher to tolerate if you're used to special perks and access points (see below) While I grew up going to the parade annually, my wife was from Wisconsin. I feel jaded, b/c every parade I see is now judged against the R.P., and most fall short! The later in life, I got to join the Pasadena F.D. (actually carrying a coin in my pocket as we speak), which meant I got to work the 8 of the last 11 Rose Bowl games. Free parking, free lunch, free game.... Pasadena pretty much is heaven on earth, IMHO

Wow, cool! The Houston skyline has really changed since that movie was shot. Nothing much changes in these parts (Local Hero dates from the early eighties, I think it was the second VHS film I ever saw after Rambo ) although it does look like someones added a wood garage shed next to the red phone box.
