I did a little reading about the issues in Joplin and found that there have been no known cases of airborne contamination or infection. Sounds like the threat of contracting the fungus via airborne means is very rare.

For anyone not following the Joplin story; a police officer was struck and killed by a lightning strike while assisting with rescue efforts the day after the storm. There were several very close calls with other rescuers who were almost struck in that same time frame.
