From time to time the problems and unhappiness mount up; I call mine "zombies." When the zombies get thick, I usually do one of three things: take a nap and unlease massive snore-sonic weaponry; hit the road into nature; or jump onto the internet and put my brain to contributing to various amusing and educational forums.

What do you do to cure the zombie problem, aka cheering yourself up?

Plan for the future; what you'll do when things turn around. They always do.
I hope your problems are temporary. Most are.
Recessions and bad jobs/relationships/marriages all end. The worst fears are often over things that never happen.
Ask yourself 'can I deal with the worst that can happen?' if you can; where is the problem? You can bounce back when things pick up. And it's you and the rest of the world struggling at the moment. Don't feel you have failed.
Course none of this may apply to you. If you are riddled with cancer, and have a month left. I've no answers.
You always have us here on the forum to chat to.

Exercise hard enough that I can sleep soundly from the depletion (which also means I'll be sore the next 2 days).

1. take a hike regularly
2. exercise almost daily x 1 - 1.5 hrs strenuous
3. nothing lasts forever

5. have a problem? build a bridge and get over it

It depends on what I am facing. Sometimes all I need is to go for a walk to clear my head. Sometimes I need something more than that.

It's very simplistic, but my failsafe remedy, at least temporarily (depending on the size of the zombie) is a good old fashioned icecream cone. I'm an optomist by nature, and usually try to make the best of things or least remember the old saying "This too shall pass", but an icecream cone always puts me in better spirits. I love icecream to begin with but there's something about eating it on the cone that never fails to raise my spirits, especially with one of those decadent waffle cones drizzled with chocolate. Maybe it's giving into my sweet tooth. Maybe it brings back feels of the innocence of childhood. Maybe it's the usually taboo act of sticking my tounge out in public. I don't know, but it works for me! :p

1) Attack the problem. This works with some problems (Work due soon: Get work done. House is a mess: Clean it up. Etc.) but not with other things (Family member is a sponging good for nothing).

2) Improve the state of the mind by working on the body. Food, exercise, sleep, and time alone with my wife are my favorites (not in that order).

3) Improve the state of the mind by working on the heart. Time with kids, wife and friends does this for me.

4) Improve the state of the mind by working on the mind. Work (sometimes), reading, video games, Internet fora, time alone to think (often combined with exercise), shooting (practice, training, competition).

5) Relaxation with retail therapy. Sometimes making a Costco run is therapeutic even if I'm just shopping for groceries. It seems to satisfy the hunter/gatherer in me.

6) Turning the mind off with TV, movies, and passive Internet surfing (distinct from contributing to fora).

7) Turning the mind off with beer, wine or liquor.


Note that booze, retail therapy and food can cause more problems than they temporarily alleviate. Drinking, spending and/or eating myself into drunken fat insolvency isn't as amusing as it used to be when I was younger.
