Actually that material was first presented in 1945 in the joint US/UK/Ca Arctic Manual. The main editor/contributor was Vilhjálmur Stefánsson which meant that his work disappeared when he was denounced as a C**munist in 1951 which basically ended any interest in his excellent work in North America. The Arctic Manual is a great read, but hard to find in good condition.

Those who wrote it had all spend many many months on the land living with the Inuit/Dena, and other natives of the far north during the first three decades of the last century and all had a very scientific precision in information and diagrams that make it such a fine resource.

Slight thread hijack.

Just to add to Bruce's comments. Vilhjalmur Stefansson is a colorful (and controversial) person in Arctic history.

Stefansson authored many books that offer, at times a fascinating look into the early years of Artic exploration and the people who inhabit the region. Original hard copies of his books are rare, however some reprints and others are available on Amazon.com. Also Archive.org has scanned copies of the original books for download.

The controversy of Stefansson comes from the ill-fated voyage of the Karluk. One of the most notable survivors of the Karluk was Ada Blackjack.

I also own a book written about Ada Blackjack (available at Amazon.com.) The book is written partly from info in Blackjack's diaries and is a very compelling read (bit dry at times) of survival that IMO is one of the greatest survival stories of all time.

(End of thread hijack)

I have the Swedish language version and have used Google Translator to help with some of the sections that look interesting. If it were not for the manual being 220+ pages, I would slowly translate it all into a new doc then screenshot in all the images to create an English version.

Please post this one too!

I have a copy of this, but the manual is in Swedish. Let me know if you still want a copy.

Dang, didn't realize it was not in English. Or as they say in Sweden "hassnelf alkslek seeseenfloof der English"... or something like that. wink

Yeah what I have is in Swedish. And I’m having a heck of a time locating it right now (moving will do that). If anyone else has it and wants to post it, please do.
