College president goes for a short jaunt to do some bird watching, and... Story is here.

More as details are available.

I'm glad he made it out OK. I've never been in a Louisiana swamp, but I've been in plenty of northwoods swamps. They are muddy and full of biting fies and skeets. He doesn't appear to be as dirty or bug-bit as I would have expected. Will be interesting to see what equipment he had and how he spent the 4 days.

Glad he made it out! I spent about an hour sight-seeing in a Louisianna swamp once back in my blissfully ignorant and unprepared 20s. I quickly decided that I had seen enough to last me a lifetime. I couldn't imagine getting stuck there for four days, nevermind unexpecedly.

I'm interested to hear more about what he had with him and how he spent the time.

Thanks for the link.

Of all the places, the swamp (anywhere) is not where I would be ever want to be lost...

I like hills. I would not even want to be in a swamp, much less lost there.

Update:

"Dr. Francisco Piedrahita was located by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office helicopter, standing under a tree with a camera around his neck, about 200 yards off the Wood Duck trail.

The helicopter alerted ground crews, which then located Piedrahita, who said he survived by eating foliage and dipping swamp water.

Linda Friar, a spokesperson for the National Park Service said Piedrahita appeared to be in good condition, but was dehydrated. He was taken to West Jefferson Hospital where officials said he was "covered in bug bites and his legs were blackened from standing in swamp water for so long." They said otherwise he was okay."

As someone who has spent a bit of time on the swamp, "eating foliage" means he had some knowledge of the local flora or was darn lucky. "Dipping swamp water", too. There's some nasties in that water besides 'gaters and snakes.

Try this news article

He sounds like a really dim bulb, head of a university or not.

Quote:
Signs at every trailhead tell visitors to stay on the walks. A walk in the park "looked like no risk at all," Piedrahita said, but he was worried about losing his cell phone, so he had left the phone in the safe at the hotel where he was staying. When he took the dirt trail, he figured the fact that it wasn't built up meant there was no need for boardwalks, he said. I never thought of the swamps," he said.

Quote:
"I could never find my way across what appeared to be the wider part of the swamp," he said.

Try going back the way you came in?

Quote:
"To survive, he said, he ate a few plant stems. "For drink I had to use urine," he told reporters.

Urine was a better choice than the water?

...kidney problems resulting from dehydration and little food...

More likely kidney problems from drinking concentrated urine...

Jeez!
