I was wondering if anyone has any first hand knowledge of how the saws on the Leatherman models hold up. I have found some "reviews" on the net, but I was really looking for something discussing hard, field use over time.

The wire saws, while saving weight and space, tend to "gum up" rather quickly. I've thought about carrying a sawzall type wood blade. I would like to have something on my person, like in my back pocket. The sawzall blade can slide right in behind my wallet and does cut quite well. The only problem is holding on to it.

This would be besides my hatchet and collapsable bow saw I carry in my field pack. But that's not always "on my person." I'm asking if the Leatherman saw will stand up to use over time. If it will, the other saw blade is obsolete. If not, what are my options?

I've cut a lot of stuff with my Super Tool over the years, and it is still going strong, sharp as ever. It just has a short stroke, so cutting anything larger than about 1" in dia is a slow job...

I have found the Leatherman saw to be a slight improvement over those found on SAK's by virtue of the locking feature(wave). Mine has held up well to an occasional sawing of wood up to a treated 2x4 and is still sharp. Ditto the short stroke comment.

Like all the other tools on the Leatherman I use it only when it is more convenient than going to get a real saw, screwdriver, etc.

All said, I still put a BRAIDED wire saw in my kits.
