May I suggest taking a couple days, renting a car and driving to Versailles? As long as you already have a layover, you may as well make it a long layover and do something worth the effort.

The Louvre is good too if you would rather stay in Paris. Musee d' Orsay (also in Paris) is another good museum if you prefer more contemporary artists.
