Was Wondering What methods of water proofing your gear you all use besides Vacuum sealers? Personally I use lays of Plastic wrap Aluminum foil and ziplock bags. I tend to avoid Tapes and Adhesives as they melt in high heat and can react with what they are put on negatively.

Mostly I use Ziploc freezer bags and Aloksak bags. I haven't used plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Most of my non-electronic gear is at least partially water-resistant.

I use ziplock bags, sometimes double, and various sizes of dry bags, which I discovered when I began sea kayaking. Neither works very well unless you close them up very carefully, but I am pretty sure that applies to any system.

I also use zip-lock bags, the "storage" type; they are a bit more durable. However, I find no matter how careful you are, movement tends to cause small openings that allow water in.

My favorite solution is to put the bags into screw top plastic containers of the type that COSTCO uses for many of its products. You can also find similar screw top containers in many dollar stores. You can also re-cycle some from products bought at your local grocery store.

Downside is that they don't pack as compactly and add some weight.

I always used plain old Glad freezer bags for backpacking. They're strong enough to serve as an emergency canteen or whatever. The generics are much less durable. For critical items, I would put one bag, sealed with a twist tie, into a second bag that was sealed the same way. Never had a problem.

For canoeing, I'd consider using my old Nalgene canteens in the same way. Sealed Glad bag inside, and close the lid. Plus, bonus points for extra flotation in the pack.

Freezer bags, coated stuff sacks, roll-top dry bags if I'm expecting a dunking, and foil tape for long-term reserves.

I mostly use ziplock bags for the small stuff. Big things, like my sleeping bag go in a dry bag and I've got everything in the main compartments of my pack in one dry bag. Started off using garbage bags in high school but they rip too easily.

For my smaller stuff (fire kit, emergency food and FAK) I used storage boxes from Plano. These are hard, o-ring sealed boxes, similar to Otterboxes, but a little less bulky and a little less expensive. I pick them up at the local Bass Pro Shop during their fishing sales.

They are used a lot for fishing tackle and such. I have used them for my archery gear for years and really like them. It helps the anal retentive part of me keep my gear organized.

Usual disclaimers.

I use Aloksak bags, Ziplocks, vacuum bags and waterproof cases like Otterbox and Pelican. Depends on what I'm trying to keep dry. I also use Baby Soda Bottles and sample vials that I got from a chemical shop.
