I have at least two mag bars, sitting quietly in my gear closet. I never used them consistently either. There are alternatives (dryer lint, cotton balls) that are just as good, even more consistent, and slightly lighter, for that matter.

I also like to carry a bit of alcohol based hand sanitizer. Besides keeping me hygienic, it also is a great fire starter - even works as straight fuel in an alcohol stove.
