Very sorry Sue. Sometimes our SUV's can become a kind of "self contained environment". They've got good sound systems, lots of fancy instruments on the dash panel, digital controls for the temperature, a talking GPS system. You name it.

It's possible to get so focused with all this internal stuff inside the SUV, that you can kinda' lose contact with the outside world. I don't know if this is what really happened to the driver in the accident, but it's one possibility.

Anyway - sorry and prayers.

Some words from the Elena Filatova blog that stuck with me:
it is inexcusable errors in design of humans that makes reactors dangerous

The same probably applies to all-manual railroad crossings.

I am sorry for the loss of lives, friends and colleagues.

Yes, the quality control of humans is seriously lacking.

As has been mentioned on this site before, it isn't the one thing that goes wrong, but the problems that accumulate that turn an inconvenience into a disaster: poor clothing choice, no kit, lose your map, snow/fog comes in, you make a wrong turn, sprain your ankle.

There is an unsubstantiated rumor that Dwight is starting to talk. I don't know if it is fact or wishful thinking.

I do quality assurance/programming for a living, and volunteer in emergency management. I do find myself making assumptions, or generally doing the "it won't happen to me" thing. Its human, and it only takes a moment lapse of being anal about things to beget tragedy. Everyone always second guesses people who are involved an accidents and thinks those people are "dumb", but it can happen to all of us.

My thoughts are with your friend, and yourself. Stay safe.
