Just bought myself a Rotring 600 ballpen in Lava finish. Thin, easy to carry, but quite hefty. I think it has a brass barrel. If it were a bit longer, it could be used as a cudgel. Does anyone here carry or use weighty pens?

I have a silver Rotring 600 Trio in the now-discontinued original pattern. I have carried it with an eye to it's potential use as a weapon.

A few years ago, while afoot sightseeing in Washington, DC, the Rotring & a Spyderco Delica were all I was able to carry for my personal security. Perforce, I left the Glock in Virginia, where we were staying & where my carry permit was valid. And, foolishly, I left the Surefire 6P with it.

The pen may be mightier than the sword, but it was a backup to the knife!

The Rotring is the heaviest pen I own, but my EDC pens are a set of lacquered brass bodied Waterman Laureates. They have a nice heft, but aren't as strong. Away from work, I usually carry a stainless steel Parker T-ball Jotter or slimline Jotter, with either Fischer space pen refills, or lately, the Parker Gel refill. Both are solid enough to offer some striking capability, should it be needed.

I see that Rotring 600 Trio is a 3 in 1 pen. I have a 4 in 1 pen made by stylus plus. I need something with a bit better quality through, I wore the outside on my first one then the clip popped off and the latch spring popped out and flew away. They replaced it and I have been extra careful with it now. I would like to know if you have any suggestions as to something a bit better quality while still a 4 in 1. Anything maybe take gel refills with different colors, I use uniball .2mm gel pens a lot, if I could find simila in a 4 in 1 type it would be great.

This can be had with either 4 writing points or 3 writing points and a data scribe tip.

Nicely made and reasonably heavy. Most Rotring pens are of substantial body materials and last a long time.

I too, prefer my pens (but not my ladies <img src="images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />), pleasingly plump. I carry a Lamy 2000 set - a fountian pen, a .05mm pencil, and a 4-color pen - all hefty, built like tanks, and amazing to write with.

How these will help me in a survival situation, I have no idea.

I'm not referring strictly to survival. I'm talking about repurposing. Using things for other than their intended purpose. How about using a pen as a miniprybar?

The other day, my stapler got stuck in a clenched, stapling position. I tried prying it open with a Papermate Flexgrip. I wound up prying the tip right off the pen. Used my scissors next. Worked like a charm. Next time, my new Rotring 600 will be up at bat.

Don't do it! Don't abuse your nice pen in that manner! If there is anything else at hand to use save that pen. Those substantial pens are wonderful works of engineering art! Certainly they will do the job and are solid enough to withstand the abuse but why (short of a true survival situation) would you want to scar up that work of art simply to unstick a stapler? Use the ruler, the scissors, the staple-remover, your Kabar or leatherman but don't abuse that pen if you don't need to!

I second that. I use Rotring fountain pens and .5 mm pencils and they are plainly beautiful. Thank God I went thru my wild stage of fountain pens abuse with cheap Parkers and destroyed pleantly of them to learn how to value and care for a good writing tool. But if needed; stab into carotid artery would end the possible hostile takeover in a sec. Yeah pen is mighter than sword. Plus ladies love men who know how to accesorize in the musculine way (hint: Leatherman Juice (purple one) is not the way to go <img src="images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. )

I love to write with fountain pen, but .....
in these computer's days, I seldom have the opportunity to use one. So, between two uses, the ink has usually dried and the pen is no longer working...
So after buying well known brand pens, I finally ended buying cheap disposable foutain pens. The ink those pens use doesn't dry so easily.

What ink do the Rotring fountain pens use ? Standard ? or non drying ink ?
Does anyone know ?
