I mostly skipped through the first video segment but stopped briefly at each item shown. The camera operator needs to cut down on the caffeine before filming...I was getting vertigo from watching it.

As for the contents of the kit and the reported cost, one could do much better by spending an hour or two researching kits on forums such as here and they would have a much better, all around kit in the end.

Trust me I watched every second of eatch video for "research" purposes and its a lot worse all together. For 400$ I can blow the kit out of the water with less items purchased even.

The Mayday kits he's selling can be found on amazon and other places on the web. I'm guessing that he's trying to pinch off a corner of the market. grin

Ok about 30 sec's in and he's show a 5.00 pocket knife and a 8.00 "machete" so I'm already guessing what the quality of the rest of the items will be.

Its not too difficult to actually have some decent kit (esp if using some choice ex-mil surplus) rather than $400 worth (huh) of mainly junk. i.e. why have 4 different junk compasses when you can get a good one for $12.

http://www.amazon.com/Silva-Polaris-Type-7-Compass/dp/B004NRHL08/ref=pd_sim_sg_3

The water bottle in the video was basically a joke, you might as well just have used a flimsy milk carton when there are much more substantial Soda PET bottles around for free.

Again here is high spec cookset for $10

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemanco...1009&brand=

An ultra lightweight Stove for $40

http://www.amazon.com/Primus-Micron-Supe...39&sr=1-258

A 20F down sleeping bag for $94

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemanco...1006&brand=

An external frame pack for $112

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemanco...1005&brand=

A 3 season spec tent for $80

http://www.amazon.com/Eureka-Apex-Advent...0533&sr=8-6

An inflatable sleeping pad for $30

http://www.amazon.com/SimplySleeper-SS-3...213&sr=1-12

A Cree LED Lantern/flashlight for $30

http://www.amazon.com/CREE-Lumens-Multi-functional-Lantern-Torch/dp/B0045WFX7O/ref=pd_sim_sg_1

etc etc etc.

In my experience quality is seldom a big issue. On a fishing boat the most used knife was a $5 bait shop monstrosity with blade stamped out cheap Chinese stainless with cork handle. Its main attribute was it floated and was so cheap it was never protected so it would ride stabbed into the transom or on the shelf immediately below it. There must have been a half-dozen identical to it on board. Every few days someone would work the blade on a stone, sometimes on a piece of concrete used as a kellet, to get something like an edge. Bored on a slow day that was a favorite activity. A couple people had much better knives on their belt but 99% of the time what got used was those $5 knives because they were always right there.

The point here is to understand that survival is usually about presence and adequacy. Being there and being good enough to get by with. Our distant ancestors used chips of stone and, much later, some rather poor steel. Rarely is quality an issue in real life. I've used many knives under $20 that cut just fine and the knives keep getting better for short money.

In a real survival situation you should be overjoyed to have any knife. Given it may be all you have you're not going to throw away a $5 knife because it isn't good enough.

I can Get a 30$ Buck 119 A 10$ Nalgene and A 10$ coleman alum cookset at walmart and be far better off then anyone trying to survive off just this pack.

Even looking at the mayday stuff is rather annoying. Most premade emergency kits are pure junk but they are often for 100$ or less. Raiding your local Dollar store and selling what looks to be at least 100$ worth of junk for 4 times its price is just appalling. When you take into factor they most likely got everything in bulk from things such as Giveaways from companies that stocked to much they most likely spend even less then 100$ on the kit. Look at the "swiss army knife" they have. Its even in a Company giveaway gift box!

While I agree with you completely I still would have to say that for a 400$ Kit with items of such poor quality is still wrong. Its not about what you will end up with its about what you will obtain currently to hopefully end up with. To Throw 400$ away and still be poorly prepared is sad when as you already put you can purchase great items for good prices.

For what he's chargeing people could do ALOT better in the quality of items is all I'm saying, anything may be better than nothing but people would be wise to go and assemble their own kits and save a ton of cash and make better choices.

It looks like they went into a Dick's Sporting Goods camping aisle and dumped all the Coghlan's products into the bag.

Junk kits like this are all the rage around here just after earthquakes. Obviously you can do far better assembling your own gear and customizing your gear to your own circumstances and your preferences.

What is never included as a component in these kits is the knowledge to use all the goodies properly and effectively.

Sad Very very sad.... I wonder how they react when they get them in their hands then again when you never deal with camping gear or emergency gear im sure you wouldnt know the difference between a cheapo SAK and the real deal.

Just for comparison, here's my sub-$300 kit, as mentioned in the Urban Survival kit thread. Most of what I bought wasn't really top dollar gear, but at the same time I tried to stay away from the gimmicky garbage. It's focused more towards urban survival, but it could be adapted to a wilderness setting.

I wanted to make a suitable kit for less than $300 that I could keep under a desk at work [or whatever] with some basic tools and supplies to supplement my EDC. The total weight is 13.2lbs, which I find to be perfectly reasonable to carry all day if need be.

Started with a simple Jansport backpack. Cost around $30.

Little compartment on top contains:
-AMK SOL kit. I took out the matches and added a Victorinox Farmer and Swedish Firesteel. I also added some sewing needles and thread to the fishing kit, as well as Micropur Tablets for water purification.
-AMK Emergency Bivvy
-Titanium Cup (went with titanium just because I had a spare)
Total cost of this compartment: $95

Little Bottom pouch contains:
-Work Gloves
-Orange safety vest
-2 Bandannas
-Bic Lighter
-2 Sharpie Markers
-2 Bic Pens
-2 Emergency Ponchos
-A leatherman Blast
-6" adjustable wrench
Total cost of this compartment: $70

Middle medium compartment contains:
-First Aid Kit (I also tossed in a set of foam earplugs)
-Combo LED Flashlight/Radio (dynamo)
-Roll toilet paper
-Deck cards
-2 N95 Dust Masks
-Roll Duct tape
-Plastic Drop cloth
-Stanley Wonderbar II Pry bar
-Stanley 8-Inch Groove Joint Pliers
-2 Unscented candles wrapped in tinfoil
-Garbage bags in a ziplock bag (two 55 gallon, three 30 gallon)
Total cost of this compartment: $90

Large Compartment contains:

-two 1 Liter bottles of water
-Box of snack bars
-Package of assorted bubblicious gum
Total cost of this compartment: $10

If you notice, I left the last (and largest compartment) mostly empty except for the food and water (the latter of which can go into the two outside mesh pockets if need be). This gives me an essentially empty pocket in case I have anything I might need or want to carry.

If I was making this kit for someone else, I would add:
-a pair of safety glasses (I already wear glasses with polycarbonate lenses)
-another flashlight (probably an LED headlamp with spare batteries)
-some 550 cord (which I'll probably add to mine, but I just haven't got around to it yet).
-cash (small bills) and change (roll of quarters would likely be most useful)
