...added a 25mm liquid filled compass encased in a paracord fob to my hiking fire kit.

knot is called a footrope knot.
Ashley Book of knots; knot #792 p. 143

looks much like the doubled two strand diamond knots i used as knobs on the firesteel and magnesium.

thanks for looking.
notes:
1. the necklace is my own and has no safety release by my choice.
2.I've checked the compass for influence by the firesteel or scraper - its ok.

Neat. Won't the compass just pop out of that loop?

The paracord work is nice. I have your paracord pacecount beads and they are the best. However sometimes I think the artistry of some of these knots overwhelms their utility.

Why would you put that nice little compass on a fire?

(Just kidding)

The things I've come to EDC are my mini-Rittergrip, my BSA Hot Spark fire starter, a Fox Sonic(?) whistle, an Arc AAA LED light, and I used to carry a little Suunto keychain compass, but the compass didn't last very long being battered by my keys.

I need to find an alternative because I think a simple compass is important. Those keys are pretty abusive though.

Oh, I like your knottage ... pretty slick!

I prefer a somewhat larger compass. My experience is that if you need a compass, you want something that will give you a more accurate bearing than the tiny button compasses can provide. There are compact plate compasses that are not significantly heavier, although they don't do well on a key chain.

Reminds me of the knot work that I used to see aboard USS Wisconsin.

I am very impressed.

Superb.
