Being new to the forum, I was reading some of the older posts. And came a crossed a recommendation for swimming goggles in their "bug out bag".

Why, what are they used for?

To protect your eyes by keeping out dust, smoke and other debris during a fire or building collapse. Pete

Swimming goggles fully protect the eyes from dust and debri that may be in the air in a building collapse etc. Remember some of the people exiting WTC buildings were essentially blinded by dust etc in the eye. Water was needed to flush out their eyes, and that was in short supply in the immediate area.

Safety goggles will not prevent this prevasive dust from getting to the eyes. I still need to add a pair to my daily carry bag, but not my other kits.

Thanks, you guys know everything. So I guess a dust mask is in order as well?

There are some discussions about dust masks in the archives. I carry 2--N95 masks in my bag, mostly for the likely building collapse and hopefully subsequent rubble digging.

There are also discussions both here and on the main site about smoke hoods which you may also what to take a look at. I have not added these to my kit, but it is not because fire is not a risk, just like the swim goggles have not done it.....yet.

Loads of stuff on both the forum and main site, almost overwhelming, but evaluate your likely scenarios and start getting prepared. Lots of help here.

When I travel, I take swim goggles for:

1) The possibility that I'll need eye protection from swirling airborne particles during some disaster.
2) Doing laps in the hotel pool.
3) On a commercial flight, donning them before takeoff and pretending to be the Red Baron, much to the amusement of formerly crying children. It makes them stop and stare.

LOL!

Of course the silk scarf irritates the folks in the seats behind you, but at least is a natural material and not a synthetic. <img src="images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
