You might consider returning to the spot when the snow is gone. Chances are you won't find it but stranger things have happened. I once lost a knife, nothing special but with some sentimental value, and happen to hike through the same area a few months later and ... there it was. Stuck in a log, where I had left it. I still have that knife.
This sort of random, but regular, loss has convinced me that I leave a thin trail of tools and equipment behind me. That given enough time, constant replacement of all that is lost, and as long as others don't take it, I would eventually be able to go camping with nothing at all because everything I need is already out there.
It also points out that there is a virtue to using less expensive gear but having some redundancy. No matter how good any one item is there is always some chance of losing it. Spend all your money on a single item and you are going to be in trouble if it comes up missing.
