Friday drove from Stockton to Sacramento to Cloverdale, 4-5 hours on the road plus a couple of stops. From Sacramento on the rain and wind just kept getting more intense. I thought the Saturday mushroom adventure might be stuck inside all day.
Wrong! Saturday morning was mostly clear of rain and even the afternoon showers were light and very intermittent. I took part in 3 1/2 mushroom walks, pooping out when walk 3 was heading into an area I had already been that day.
Many matsutake and chantrelle, a couple hedgehog, a few lactarius, and one lonely but bueatiful big blewit. many other interesting but non-edible fungi. More good hunting discussions and practice sessions, including using the binomial keys in Arora's two books. Fine lunch.
Culinary report: chantrelles excellent, hedgehog maybe better [very meaty and almost smoky], matsutake smelled [floral and red-hots]much better than they tasted [bland], and blewit subtle and tasty [reminescent of articoke heart but more delicate].
A tiring but excellent day at Emerald Earth.
