Funny (ok, not so funny...) story from MSNBC, which I don't normally read.

About the use of plb's to call for help. Appears many rescue groups think that people are trying to do more than they are capable of because they have plb's as a backup.

Quote:

The Grand Canyon's Royal Arch loop, the National Park Service warns, "has a million ways to get into serious trouble" for those lacking skill and good judgment. One evening the fathers-and-sons team activated their beacon when they ran out of water.
Rescuers, who did not know the nature of the call, could not launch the helicopter until morning. When the rescuers arrived, the group had found a stream and declined help.
That night, they activated the emergency beacon again. This time the Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter, which has night vision capabilities, launched into emergency mode.
When rescuers found them, the hikers were worried they might become dehydrated because the water they found tasted salty. They declined an evacuation, and the crew left water.
The following morning the group called for help again. This time, according to a park service report, rescuers took them out and cited the leader for "creating a hazardous condition" for the rescue teams.

Definitely NOT funny. Puts rescuers in jeopardy, AND makes it likely that when a real emergency occurs, the response may be lack luster: "Oh, another one. Hey, guys, let me finish this hand of of solitaire first before we go 'rescue' another yuppie whose latte got cold."

One has to wonder if they were "educated" the first and second time. And if they were fined. I think they should be - you can get fined for too many false alarms to 911, why not to SAR?

PLB's are great and I use one.

I am concerned that we are going to have too many false calls for help due to a gross lack of preparation.

So, should we be fining these guys?

Didn't we dissect this story a while ago?

Yes, indeed we did. Old news. I could check it out, but I believe the NPS did charge these folks for at least some of the effort expended.

IIRC, "creating a hazardous condition" is a big no-no and can result in a fine.

My apologies. I should have noticed that the date on the story was from October 2009. Tim W.

Actually, once they get that Transporter app worked out the problem will change from one of rescue to IT support issues with the bugs in the app.

"When I press SEND on the Transporter app nothing happens. And it's raining. We need help NOW! I have my weekly massage scheduled in 20 minutes and I'm stressing....."
