I have read through most of the posts and don’t think I have seen any mention of alternate means of transportation.

Just to test my endurance I took a back packing bike trip a few months ago. With a 40 lb. pack I made about 50 miles in six and a half hours. Granted I live in Chicago I didn’t have any hills to contend with.

In the case of an impending disaster it sure would be nice to put some miles between me and ground Zero.
