I had been looking for additional Titanium water bottles ever
since MSR stopped producing them. I finally found a new
supplier:

http://www.vargooutdoors.com/Titanium-Water-Bottle
Review: They are made a bit cheaper than the discontinued MSR bottles although they appear to be almost as strong (I didn’t do destructive testing). It looks like they cut a few minor corners to get the cost down to $59-$69 range.

The lid is a bit on the cheaper side than I would like. For those of you familiar with the Klean Kanteen the threading isn’t as thick and seems of lesser quality (although the seal is fantastic). I just have concerns that it isn’t that rugged.

The major cost savings is that the bottles are not prewashed. They come incredibly dirty and require a bit of time to clean up. Once cleaned they are fine (oil and titanium dust). Thankfully, they have a wider mouth than the MSR
bottles which makes cleaning them easier.
Overall I have no complaints. They seal well and the specs are as advertised.

In the future, I will be testing them for heavy metal and radioactive contamination due to the country of origin.

P.S. I don't have any connection to the company selling these.

Seventy dollars for a simple item like a water container is beyond ridiculous.

Thanks for a nice review! I will say, though, that I don't understand the appeal of titanium for a water bottle. Obviously in some applications every ounce counts but a litre of water weighs over 2 lbs alone; it seems the extra few ounces of a stainless bottle over a titanium one would be negligible. Of course, I've not had the chance to use one so I'm just speculating.

Thanks for the review, but I have found the Vargo Titanium bottle to be slightly disappointing considering the price point. It appears to be the lightest bottle out there that can be used to boil water directly so the price does reflect this. The bottle stopper does appear to be the weakest part of the design. Its doesn't appear to be to be too durable when compared the wide mouth Klean but only time will tell.

Vargo 0.75L 112g 750ml 6.70

Sigg Standard 1L 145g 1000ml 6.90

Nalgene 38oz 137g 1100ml 8.03

Tatonka Stainless Steel 1L 243g 1000ml 4.12

Klean 60oz 388g 1900ml 4.90

Platypus 1L 35g 1000ml 28.57

Guyot Stainless Steel 38oz 366g 1100ml 3.01

From the above numbers the Tatonka is the winner for me unless I can find a neoprene cosy for the Klean 60oz bottle. (I've been quite impressed with the Klean 60oz wide mouth bottle and over time will be getting a couple more to double up as a Tea Coffee and Sugar set for the Kitchen). The wider base diameter of the Klean 60oz seems to have better stability for boiling water over a gas burner.

If the ability to boil water is not a high priority then its hard to beat a free PET soda bottle.

I like to use a soda bottle in conjunction with a Peak 700 titanium cup which mate nicely together, yielding a combination which is lighter, more versatile, and more cost effective. I don't have to heat up all of my water supply and then try and handle a very hot bottle. I have never tried that, but I can imagine how much fun that must be...

I can actually cook in the 700 - rudimentary cooking to be sure, but enough to serve as my entire cook set when I want as light a load as possible. If I don't want to use a soda bottle, either a Nalgene or Platypus one L will fit nicely in the Peak 700. If you want to save money for a bit more weight, various stainless steel cups will also nest with any and all of the above.

Any and all of these combos make a lot more sense than a titanium water bottle. I don't know exactly why, but there is something about these overpriced gadgets that gets me into rant mode...

Rant off.
