Rant ON

You just bought a Zipka with the money you saved for a while just to find out six months later that Zipka plus is comming out. And has all the features that you really wanted.

You just bought a Large Sebenza plain model just to have Chris Reeve or Doug offering a personalized ones six months down the line.

You just bought an MSR stove just to realize that six months later MSR released mulitfuel one.

I hate when that happenes. Things are getting lighter and stronger all the time but what should we do with our older equipment?

Rant OFF

Matt:

There is a probably an Explorer or Boy Scout troop that would love to have your used, well cared for stove. Or, maybe one of your buddies might want to buy it off of you.

The Zipka can probably be sold over at Candle Power Forums.

And finally, I bet you can ship your Sebenza, along with a donation, off to Chris Reeve for the etching of the ETS logo.

Or, you can be like me and just squirrel the stuff away for another day.

Matt--

Well, since these upgrades seem to follow your purchases, would you mind doing the rest of us a favor & purchasing earlier? That way, the improved models will come out sooner, & we'll all benefit. Well, almost all, anyway...

{Tongue in cheek mode off}

Seriously, though, you have multiple options, as others have mentioned: give it to a deserving group (or even individual, if you're so inclined--perhaps your significant other, if they lack equipment of their own), sell it (CPF for the Petzl; KnifeForums for the Sebenza & maybe the MSR), or squirrel it away in a BOB, or cache (such as a bag or box at family/friend's place--kind of expensive to do that with the Sebenza, but...)

Anyway, I sympathize completely, 'cause I thought I was the only one to which these upgrades-after-I-buy-it occurred!

Our scout troop donates old gear to other troops. We occaisionally will upgrade or replace slightly worn gear to reduce repair and maintenance. Our council and district staff are in touch with troops that are either just starting up with no or little gear or troops from low income areas that don't have the same resources we do.

Making an equipment donation to such a group, regardless if it's scouts or some other youth organization, truly has a positive impact on many of our youth.

I had the same misadventure when I bought a whole bunch of Photon 3 led lights, last december. I had just read about the new microchip and the SOS mode.

But .......... this new chip was not yet incorporated in the models I bought .....

On one hand...
Ok, but do you need the latest gear? Could you miss one step and wait for the next series? Remember it's the man IN the machine. You will also lose the financial burden
I carry an at least six year old Champ (it might even be eight years) and still everything works on it. It takes some looking after but it worth it.

On the other hand...
It is great to have the latest gear. It is great if you skimped another Kg or half Kg of you camping gear. Or if you have more handy features.

Reinhardt,

you are correct. No point in filling pockets of "the Man" with more cash if ugrade is purly cosmetic like in Sebenza case. I mean it would be nice to have something personalized but since it won't improve functionality than who cares. But if functions get upgraded now that's the totally different story.

Perfect example is that damned headlight. Old model, simple on and on switch $30. New model $35, waterproof, 4 levels of power. If I had an option before I would have totally went with more expensive one.

Just saying...

Lets see, I bought Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on a 33 1/3 LP and an 8 track for my '66 Chrysler 300. My friend copied it on his reel to reel in case the new technology failed. Next week he showed up with the new pocket sized casstte tape and I pondered an adapter unit for my now obsolescent 8 track player. I finally upgraded to a C.D. The 20 something salesclerk with the multiple bodypiercings asked if I was buying it for my kids. No, it's for me.OH! Well I think your going to like this music. Thankyou MISS, thats very re assuring. Did you know Mick Jagger is trying to suppress a magazine interview? He didn't realise it was AARP. "Oh, I don't know which music magazine that is," And with Yoda like wisdom I growled" Oh you will, you will." Meanwhile my nephew is talking about DVD lazer disks and why don't I just download Floyd on the computer. I wonder how Oetzi felt, just hafting his copper axehead when some trader from the future Tin Islands showed up with this funny looking alloy
