Some things you just can't prepare for. I know when I am in a tree stand, I usually don't have more than three arrows or three rounds of ammo up there with me. The video is not great, but it makes you think.

Now there are 4 p*ssed of bears out there who associate human beings as pointless aggressive predators who kill just for the pleasure of killing. These bear hunters don't do anything to make the woods any safer for the rest of the normal folks out there. This fool got off lightly.

The bears have learned that humans are a source of pain and suffering rather than the easy meal they thought was up in the tree. This is exactly what park rangers are trying to teach bears so as to avoid future bad human/bear encounters.

He was deer hunting, what idiot goes bear hunting with a bow?
Didn't you find it strange that he fought the bears off with his feet and voice instead of his weapon?

Are you a PETA member or something?

For the record black bears in MI are very timid and encounters are rare, attacks even rarer. This guy smelled like food and bears and food are like sharks to blood. Once the cubs showed up mama bear did what mama bears do when their cubs are in trouble.

Well, the video had little in the way of relevant details.

Here's a link to a couple of more informative articles (scroll down a bit). I'll let you read them both and you can make your own judgments.

http://www.fieldandstream.com/hunting/bow-hunting

What we know is this:
1) he was hunting for deer
2) he may not be the fleetest wing in the bucket o' herbs and spices.

Actually, I met a guy on a recent camping trip that was doing just that. For the record though, something was a little off with that guy. Anyway, unless you're into the Japanese art of Kyudo, I don't think people should be hunting anything with a bow. All I've ever seen is mall ninjas mistaking themselves for skilled archers. If yer gonna kill an animal, be humane, use a rifle with the appropriately sized cartridge. And be a frikin' decent shot.

With respect, that's rediculous. I know many bow hunters that take deer almost every season. One of my best friends owns an archery shop, and he's taken just about everything you can hunt in North America, with a bow. Of course, you do actually have to know how to stalk and hunt- you can't just shoot out of your truck window at 300 yards. wink

Tacky as it is, even that requires some skill.

There are many areas up here that are designated "bow only" for deer. Usually whitetail, since their populations can get out of hand, and the only other way to thin them out is with people's cars (ouch). And usually in areas with a somewhat dense population, such as acreage developments or near the edges of cities, where hunting with a rifle is deemed too much of a public hazard.

The KFC is optional.

That is one of the reasons that hunters in Washington state
are allowed to carry a sidearm if they have a (shall issue)
concealed permit. This includes bow hunters.

Some of the most skilled and conscientious hunters I know use a bow. A well-shot arrow can be every bit as deadly as a bullet. When firearms overtook bows in warfare and hunting it was because it's so much easier and quicker to teach a rifleman than a bowman.

Oh I know, I was just exaggerating. But as you said, its much easier to learn to shoot, and most people don't even bother to practice that. So my point was for all the unskilled bow hunters, which unfortunately seems to be a large majority of them.

Haha, true. But if you're a reasonable shot it's not too hard to keep your shot in the kill zone of a deer at 300 yards with a rest. If you consider that about 18" for a deer, you're talking about 6 MOA. If you can't do that off a rest you probably shouldn't be out there hunting, and certainly shouldn't take a shot beyone a 150 or so yards. Of course, the tricky part will be judging the range accurately. Growing up on the plains I find that most people are pretty poor judges of distance. On the ranch where I grew my dad had measured out most of the distances on our place with surveying gear, and put flags at some of them. While hunting we'd often ask on of our companions how far away they thought the deer were, and it wasn't unusual for guys to be off by half again or more. Deer that were 300 yards out were commonly thought to be at 500 or more. You especially see this with people that don't really understand the actual size of a deer. It's funny to see guys with newfangled magnums shooting six feet over a deer's back! grin

In my neck of the woods, long shots are uncommon. In the north where rifles are legal for deer hunting the woods are thick and there are a lot of glacial hills and eskers. A carbine will do the trick. In the south where it is slugs only, you have to wait until the deer gets within 100 yards to have a safe shot. I'm speaking in generalities, as there are exceptions in the local terrain of course.

Wow, those must be some very intellectual bears. I thought they were just climbing the tree to go eat the guy. How silly of me.

Not hard to shoot a bow with better accuracy than a handgun.

Doesn't take much practice to be competent to 40 yards with
a bow, 50 or 60 if you take it seriously.

All the bow hunters I know use a range finder, you can get them
now for as little a $70.

Another unprovoked black bear attack.

" NEAR KAKTOVIK: The Anchorage rafters' food was properly stored, officials say.
By JEANNETTE J. LEE The Associated Press
Published: June 27th, 2005

Two people camping along the Hulahula River in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge were killed by a grizzly bear, officials said Sunday. Officials discovered the bodies and an unused firearm in a tent at a campsite near the river. The couple, whose names were not released, were believed to be in their late 50s or early 60s, North Slope Borough police said. They were from Anchorage and had been on a recreational rafting trip down the river, Alaska State Troopers said. The victims were in their tent when the attack occurred, according to troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain. The campsite was clean, with food stored in bear-proof containers. "The initial scene indicates that it was a predatory act by the bear," DeSpain said. The bear was at the site Saturday night when public safety officials arrived. They shot and killed the animal but did not remove it. A rafter had seen the animal at the site and notified authorities in Kaktovik."

That said, as most hunters know, when it comes to hunting, the killing is not the sport. It is about preparation, tradition, skill, luck, and family ties. For every deer that lived free and is harvested quickly and humanely by me for my family, a cow that waited in fear in a line at the slaughter house, died at the hand of a stranger, and now comes wrapped in cellophane to hide its origins, is spared.
